Clearing and Insurance

Joining Newcastle University through Clearing? We're here to help.

Guaranteed accommodation

We want to help make the process of clearing less stressful and that’s why we have our Clearing and Insurance Guarantee. This means that we will guarantee you accommodation so long as you meet our eligibility criteria. The guarantee is an offer of a room which may be in University-owned, a managed partnership, or occasionally with a local accommodation provider.

Available accommodation

When applying for accommodation through Clearing or Insurance, our availability will be limited. When you apply, you'll only be able to choose accommodation that is still available at the time of your application.

If your favourite accommodation has sold out, don't worry, we're confident you'll have a great experience wherever you live. Remember that it’s the people who you live with that make your experience, not the location. Our former resident, Cecily, tells us of her experience of not getting her chosen accommodation but still having a great time anyway, in her blog.

We expect to have availability in our managed partnership accommodation, Portland GreenThis is a modern and well equipped purpose built student accommodation located in the Ouseburn

Applying for accommodation

To be eligible for the Clearing and Insurance Guarantee you must have applied for accommodation by 19 August 2024.

If you were a previous offer holder and had already applied or reserved a room, you'll need to apply again and choose from the accommodation that we have available.

To apply, follow the steps below. If you previously applied during the main cycle, start at Step 3:

Step 1 – register and log in

You need to be a firm offer holder before you can apply.

If you're a Clearing student, you'll need to wait 24-48 hours after you have added Newcastle as your Clearing choice on UCAS to be able to register.

Once your record has updated you can register using your UCAS number, surname and date of birth.

To login, use the nine-digit number you received after registering. Click "Create Application" to start.

Step 2 - start your application

We'll ask for some information ‘About You’ such as your address and details of a trusted person. Next, you'll choose how you're applying: as a single applicant, a couple, or a family. You'll also inform us of any medical needs that we need to consider, and whether you prefer single or mixed gender accommodation.

Step 3 – choose your accommodation

You'll then see the accommodation available to choose. Residences that are no longer available will be visible but marked as 'sold out'; you will not be able to add these to your basket.

Choose your accommodation and add them to your basket. The page will display how many selections you need to make.

Step 4 - provide some additional info

We'll then ask you for some additional information, and ask you to rank four price brackets. We'll use this information to match you to any accommodation that may have become available after you submitted your application.

Step 5 - submit

When you’ve completed your application, click submit.

What happens next?

We will begin sending offers of accommodation to guaranteed students from 27 August onwards, or once all firm offer holders have been allocated a room

After processing your application, you will receive an email to say that you've got an accommodation offer. This email will provide further instructions on how to view and action your offer. If you have a room in University-owned accommodation, you action this on the accommodation portal. If you have a room in a managed partnership, you will action the offer on their system. Your offer is time limited, so make sure you take note of the expiry date.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am a Clearing/Insurance applicant with a health need that impacts my accommodation. What should I do?

Accommodation availability is limited and we cannot guarantee that we will have a room that meets your needs. Please complete and return a Disability and Health Information form as soon as possible after applying. We will then assess if a specialist allocation is required. If so, we will attempt to find you a room suitable for your needs, this may not be in one of your choices.

I have already applied for accommodation but I am now coming through Clearing. Do I need to reapply?

Yes, if you have now received a Clearing offer, you will need to reapply for accommodation. If you used the Advanced Booking method, your reservation will have been cancelled.

All Clearing applicants need to submit an application and choose from the available accommodation options.

I am trying to register on the accommodation portal but I am unable to. Why is this?

You can register on the accommodation portal once your record has downloaded into the accommodation system. This can take between 24-48 hours after you have added your Clearing course to UCAS. Please be patient and keep checking back. If after 48 hours you are still encountering issues, please contact us via our Helpline.
