Men's & Women's Basketball
Getting involved in Intramural basketball couldn’t be simpler. With the option to create/join a team and play in our weekly league or you can join one of our weekly sessions.
Coaching and equipment is provided at both sessions and you do not need a team to play. Our coaches will structure the session so you receive drill based activities plus lots of game time.
Intramural basketball sessions run in partnership with the University Basketball Club.
Basketball League
Team entry is now open for the 2024-25 season, please contact our Intramural Sport Officer to enter a team.
Enter a team and compete in our Intramural Basketball League. 8 teams will battle it out in weekly fixtures, with games taking place every Sunday between 12:00 - 14:00 at Newcastle University Sport & Fitness Centre.

Weekly Sessions - When and where
Once you’ve reserved your place, turn up to one of two sessions, and play. It doesn’t matter what your experience or skill level is, everyone is welcome.
Women's sessions (starting October 9th)
- Monday 17:00 - 18:00
- Term time only
- Booking essential via NCL Sport App orwebsite
- Starts 9th October
Men's sessions (starting October 5th)
- Saturday 11.00-13.00
- Term time only
- Booking essential viaNCL Sport App or website
- Starts 5th October
All sessions are indoors at the University Sport & Fitness Centre in Sports Hall 2.

Booking is essential due to capacity limits (30 players)

- Sessions are bookable 14 days in advance

Registering a team
2023 - 24 League
Registration for the term 1 league is now open.
Registration operates on a first come first served basis with a capacity of 8 teams
- All players must have a Newcastle University SPORT or SPORT & FITNESS membership
- To register please contact the Intramural Sport Officer with the following information:
- Team name
- Captain name

Venue
Intramural Basketball league matches take place at Newcastle University Sport & Fitness Centre, Sports Hall 1
- Every Monday in term 2 during term time
- Tip offs at 16:10 or 17:10
Intramural Basketball weekly sessions with a coach take place at Newcastle University Sport & Fitness Centre, Sports Hall 2
- Women's session: Sunday 13:00 - 14:00
- Men's session: Saturday 11:00 - 13:00
League rules
League Structure
- Teams will play each other once in a league format
- Points: win = 2 draw = 1, loss = 0
- Play offs will follow the league format
The Match
- All matches are 4 x 10 minute quarters with a 1 minute quarter time
- Rolling clock
- Official basketball league rules will be applied to all matches
- Referees will be appointed to all games
- Teams can have up to 10 players in their match day squad
- All jewellery should be removed
- If a team can field 3 players the game must go ahead
Team Info
- Maximum of 10 Players per Team
- Teams should wear the same colour jerseys
- Match balls will be provided by the University Sport & Fitness Centre
- Referee fee of £6 per team paid directly to the referee on the day
- All basketball league players must be a member of the University Sports & Fitness Centre, a minimum of a SPORT level membership is required.
- Teams will be asked to submit squad sheets, no limit on the number of players per squad
- A maximum of 2 University club players who play no higher than the 3rd team can represent each team
Match Scheduling
- All league games will be scheduled in advance of the league starting by the University Sport & Fitness Centre
- All games will be published on the Intramural Basketball website
- Fixture confirmations will be sent to captains each week
- No fixture can be rearranged to an alternative date
- If a team cannot field a team the following sanctions apply:
- 40-0 loss
- 0 points
- If a team cancels on the day the following sanctions apply:
- 40-0 loss
- 1 point deduction
- Full referee fee owed (£10)
- If this happens on 3 occasions the team will be removed from the league
- If a team fails to show up for a fixture the following sanctions apply:
- 60-0 loss
- 2 point deduction
- Full refere fee owed (£10)
- If this happens on 2 occassions the team will be removed from the league
