Academic Skills
The Academic Skills Team in the Philip Robinson Library provides resources and one-to-one support for students from any discipline. The service includes:
- workshops on topics such as writing a dissertation proposal and using sources in your writing without plagiarism
- one-to-one sessions with an Academic Skills Team tutor
- online resources for advice on academic writing and a range of study skills via the Academic Skills Kit website
Maths-Aid
The Maths-Aid drop-in Centre, run by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, provides free maths and stats help for students from any subject area. The service includes:
- one-to-one help with a tutor
- mastering mathematical methods and help with statistics problems
- revising for exams with a quantitative element
- advice on graduate numerical skills, such as aptitude tests
Language learning
All students have free access to our award-winning Language Resource Centre. We provide self-study materials in over 150 languages, from Arabic to Zulu, including over 3,000 international films.
We run taster and improvement sessions and you can partner with a native speaker in your chosen language for language learning on an exchange basis. You can also take advantage of our University-wide Language Programme which offers free classes in 10 languages.

In-sessional and pre-sessional English
If English is not your first language, you may find that you need some additional support with your English language skills. INTO Newcastle University offers pre-sessional English courses over the summer before starting your degree as well as free in-sessional English classes alongside your academic studies.
