Chemistry - James Skillington Memorial Scholarship
The James Skillington Memorial Scholarship 2024-25

Newcastle University Development Trust with funds donated by the family of James Skillington, to honour his memory after he died from Leukaemia whilst studying Chemistry at Newcastle University.

Eligibility criteria
The scholarship is available to a student studying Chemistry at the University.
Preference will be given to home students, ordinarily based in the UK. Applications will be judged on academic and financial grounds.

Scholarships are available for those in Year 1 of an undergraduate STEMM degree at Newcastle University, commencing their degree in September 2023.
To be eligible for this award, you must be:
- entering Newcastle University via the PARTNERS Programme (or a similar access scheme/supported entry route
- have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include:
- unable to cover the basic cost of living
- unable to participate in extra-curricular activities or field trips
- having to work more than 10 hours per week in a job
You must also demonstrate in your application:
- your commitment to studies and aspirations for your future
- how the scholarship will make a difference to you
- how your desired studies and career ambitions will contribute to a fairer and/or more sustainable society

Details
Bursaries are available to undergraduate students in the Engineering degree programmes:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
Awards of £1,000 - £2,000 may be made for one year, with the option of reapplying for successive years.
Application is by competitive process. The fund awards bursaries to all and seeks to obtain a diverse balance of bursary recipients.
Female students are currently under-represented in the bursary awards so for this round we invite only female students to apply. We particularly welcome applications from female students from black and ethnic minority communities who are also currently under-represented in the bursary awards.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must:
- be an undergraduate home student in stage 1 of study
- have been resident in one of the following postcodes for 5+ years NE, DH, TS, SR, DL
- be studying in an Engineering degree programme, including Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering
- have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include being unable to cover basic costs, or having to work in excess of 10 hours per week in a job
Process for application
Applications must be submitted no later than 17 March 2023.
Applications will be judged on academic potential, enthusiasm and aptitude for the chosen programme of study. Applicants should use the full word count available to state their case for support.
Recipients are required to provide proof of enrolment, a supporting statement from their tutor and an annual update on their progress. They should also be available to meet the fund advisor if requested.

Architecture, Planning and Landscape - Building Futures
We are proud to offer young people of diverse ethnic heritage the opportunity to enter the architectural industry. Students on the scheme will have their fees waived for their three-year undergraduate study. They will also be provided with financial support.

Mary Spencer was a dedicated, creative teacher of many subjects, including history, for almost fifty years. As the wife of an RAF Officer, she taught throughout the UK, Zimbabwe, Cyprus, and Libya.

- ‘Home Funding’ status, which means you’re living in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and EU nationals with settled status in the UK

- have a household income of less than £35,000 per annum, as assessed by Student Finance (this will be assessed once you are accepted onto the degree programme and apply to Student Finance)

Music
Undergraduate Music Scholarships
Details
Four £3,000 scholarships are available to new undergraduate students entering a degree offered by Newcastle University’s International Centre for Music Studies in September 2023.
We will award the music scholarship in the first year of study and pay it in two equal installments, the first in December 2023 and the second in April 2024.
Eligibility
To be considered for a scholarship, you must hold an offer of admission for
- BA Honours Music (W300)
- BMus Honour Music (W304)
- BA Honours Contemporary and Popular Music (W301)
- or BA Honours Folk and Traditional Music (W344)
You must have also attended an Interview Day (academic interview and audition), and be a new UK, EU or international student commencing your studies in 2023.
Successful candidates may not be in receipt of other funding from the University.

You do not need to apply for these scholarships. Eligible candidates will automatically be considered for a scholarship on the basis of their academic merit, musical track record and performance at an Interview Day.

Three Newcastle alumni established the PARTNERS Politics Scholarship. The aim of the award is to support the brightest and best undergraduate politics students. This bursary has been generously donated to honour members of the Hindhaugh family who studied for their medical degrees at the University. Medicine – Troy-Green Memorial Bursary

This award has been agreed following a donation to Newcastle Medical School, made by the family of Dr Marian Tuszewski Troy and in remembrance of R. B. Green who supported Dr Troy to enter Newcastle Medical School at the end of WW2. The award is intended to support a promising medical student who might otherwise struggle to meet the costs associated with the MB BS programme. We encourage students from all nationalities to apply, but preference will be given to qualifying students from Poland or Eastern Europe.

Dental Surgery - Connor King Foundation Dental Scholarship

The Connor King Foundation. The scholarship was established in memory of Connor King, who tragically passed away while in Stage 3 of his Dental Surgery BDS degree at Newcastle’s School of Dental Sciences. He was a very enthusiastic young man, with a kind heart and passion for helping those less fortunate than himself.
The Foundation aims to:
- support students from underprivileged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing their careers in dentistry
- provide financial support to help with tuition fees and costs to these students

Dental Surgery - Jimmy Steele Scholarship

Two scholarships are available to students entering year 1 on the Dental Surgery BDS degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences. Scholarships are for £1,000 per annum each for stages 1 to 4.
The Jimmy Steele Scholarship was set up to keep Jimmy’s name alive in the Dental School. He was a much loved head of school and professor and if he was still alive, students would have had a taste of his distinctive and entertaining teaching style. Since his death from a brain tumour in 2017, Newcastle University along with Jimmy’s family and friends have been raising money to help students who might have financial stress in accessing a degree. The hope is that the support will go a little way to smoothing a pathway to becoming a great dentist!
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must:
- Have been accepted to study or be in stage 1 on the Dental Surgery BDS degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences in 2024-25;
- Preference will be given to home students, ordinarily resident in the UK;
- Not be in receipt of any other scholarships or bursaries from Newcastle University.
- Come from a widening participation background.

No application is necessary. The successful candidate will be contacted by email or the Student Financial Support Team by the end of the Autumn term if you were successful in receiving the scholarship.
All scholarship recipients are asked to provide:

Up to five scholarships are available to students in Year 1 of the undergraduate Dental Surgery BDS programme at Newcastle University, commencing their degree in September 2024.
The award amount is £1,000 per year for your first four years of undergraduate study.

To be eligible for this award you must:
- be in Year 1 of the Dental Surgery BDS undergraduate degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences in 2024-25
- have been resident in the North East for five years or more. Postcodes include those beginning: NE, SR, DH, DL, TD, TS

The fund supports students coming to study at Newcastle University via the PARTNERS Programme (or a similar access scheme/supported entry route) in STEMM subjects:

Scholarships are available for those in Year 1 of an undergraduate STEMM degree at Newcastle University, commencing their degree in September 2023.
To be eligible for this award, you must be:
- entering Newcastle University via the PARTNERS Programme (or a similar access scheme/supported entry route
- have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include:
- unable to cover the basic cost of living
- unable to participate in extra-curricular activities or field trips
- having to work more than 10 hours per week in a job
You must also demonstrate in your application:
- your commitment to studies and aspirations for your future
- how the scholarship will make a difference to you
- how your desired studies and career ambitions will contribute to a fairer and/or more sustainable society
