Meet the charity leader and Newcastle University graduate who has become one of the first ever people to abseil the Empire State Building
Avnish Goyal CBE has added to his long list of amazing feats by completing the ‘never done before’ challenge to raise funds for a pioneering UK youth partnership.
9 May 2024
The event – the first of its kind – is raising funds for Outward Bound in the UK and its partners around the world. Outward Bound is a worldwide educational and charitable network whose mission is to change young people’s lives through challenge, learning, and adventure. Donations so far exceed £2.4 million and fundraising continues as people recognise the incredible feat.
Avnish kicked off the Big Rappel, which spans nearly 900 feet from the building’s iconic spire down to the 30th floor. He started the abseil at the 103rd floor at over 1300 feet with a group of others including celebrity participant, actor Jared Leto, and supported by Outward Bound Trustee, Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice.
Avnish said:
“I did it! One of only a handful of people to ever abseil down one of the world’s most famous buildings, the Empire State Building. I started at the 103rd floor leaning backwards to start the abseil at over 1300 feet. What an exhilarating experience expanding my comfort zone to make a difference to so many young people through our workshops with the Outward Bound Trust and Inner Spark. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on the journey with kind words and donations. There is still time to donate here.”
Earlier this year, Avnish also set up a scholarship programme through The Goyal Foundation which will provide 10 new scholarships to Newcastle University students, including providing financial support for the full three years of their study as well as covering interview expenses and other finances to help them progress after graduation.
