International Students: Arriving in Newcastle

You will receive a really warm welcome at Newcastle to help you settle in and quickly make new friends.

We encourage all of our new international students to take part in our four-day International Welcome programme to help you adjust to life in the UK. It includes:

  • information sessions covering topics such as registering at the University; University facilities and student life at Newcastle
  • social events introducing you to the city and surrounding area

We can also offer you advice about:

  • registering with a local doctor
  • registering with the Overseas Visitors’ Office
  • opening a bank account

Meet and Greet Service at Newcastle Airport

Our Welcome team travels to Newcastle Airport to provide a meet and greet service for international students. They will be there to help you with your luggage and provide transport to take you to your accommodation.

Getting involved in student life

Newcastle University Students' Union is home to more than 200 student societies and sports clubs where you can meet like-minded people and gain valuable new skills. The International Students Society is one of our biggest student societies and it organises a range of social events and trips throughout the year.

Other societies include those dedicated to particular nationalities, interests, hobbies and religions.

Keeping in touch with friends and family

Our computers have high speed Internet connections and over 1,400 are available across campus, a number of which are accessible 24 hours a day. You can use your own laptop to connect to the University network and internet with a free wireless connection widely available.

The Learning Lounge internet cafe in the Robinson Library also has a number of computers fitted with webcams and microphone headsets, allowing you to make calls home via Skype.

All students receive a University e-mail account when they register, but if you have your own e-mail address you can also use this during your time at Newcastle.
