Engineering Facilities
Biological Engineering: Wastewater Innovation at Scale (BEWISe)
Biological Engineering: Wastewater Innovation at Scale (BEWISe)Large-scale wastewater treatment research using bacteria. The first of its type in Europe, the BEWISe facility is based at Northumbrian Water’s sewage treatment plant near Gateshead.
Civil Engineering Facilities
Civil Engineering FacilitiesThe University has an exceptional range of Civil Engineering: Facilities laboratories with a wide range of analytical instrumentation. On-campus laboratories include: heavy structures; geotechnics and materials; climate controlled bi-axial material testing; environmental engineering including microbiology and pilot-scale laboratories; driving simulator; hydraulics and hydrology.
We also have facilities based in the city and across the north of England that allow us to study full scale, real world science and engineering as it happens.
Marine Technology Facilities
Marine Technology FacilitiesThe University has a wide range of Marine Technology Facilities available for research, including:
- Hydrodynamics Laboratory
- Jones Engineering Laboratory
- Marine Technology Special Collection
- Wind Wave Current Tank
- Towing Tank
The Marine Propulsion Research Laboratory specialises in experimental hydrodynamics of ship propellers, thrusters, turbines, foils, surfaces, coatings and other innovative devices operating in water. Facilities include:
Northern Orthopaedic Retrievals Service (NORS)
Northern Orthopaedic Retrievals Service (NORS)Northern Orthopaedic Retrievals Service provides analysis of artificial joints once removed from a patient. A key ability of NORS is to determine the volumetric wear of material from the artificial joint which has entered into a patient’s body.
Tyne Pressure Testing
Tyne Pressure TestingTyne Pressure Testing is a purpose-built site housing a large, 6.75m hyperbaric chamber, rated to 600 bar. Drawing on knowledge and skills developed over 20 years of subsea testing, the facility provides deep water testing and certification with multi-hyperbaric chamber capability.
Biopharmaceutical Bioprocessing Technology Centre
Biopharmaceutical Bioprocessing Technology CentreThe focus of the Biopharmaceutical Bioprocessing Technology Centre is on Biosystems Engineering. The team has unique expertise in enhancing research activities and bridging the gap between University-based research and the taking up of technology by industry.
