Sophie: Study Spaces

Sophie shares some of her favourite study spaces in Newcastle, and tips for setting your own study space up at home.

While studying I always found that a cluttered workspace was a hindrance to my productivity and focus, while a tidy and organised study environment motivated me and helped me get my head down! A well-designed study space allows us to concentrate better, absorb knowledge more effectively and retain information for longer. It can motivate us to study more consistently and create a stress-free environment. But everyone has their unique preferences and needs when it comes to studying. That’s the beauty of creating your study environment – it can be tailored to suit your individual style and preferences!

Exploring Newcastle University Study Spaces

Newcastle University has a wide range of study spaces to cater to your needs. From quiet libraries to vibrant social areas, here are a few popular spots you can check out if you choose to study here:

Philip Robinson Library: This iconic library offers a variety of study zones, including silent study areas for undisturbed concentration, group study spaces for collaborative work, and comfy corners for breaks.

Armstrong Building: I particularly loved this one because of its picturesque surroundings! Find a study area by a window and enjoy beautiful views.

Students’ Union Spaces: The Students’ Union provides bustling areas where you can collaborate with peers and participate in group discussions. These spaces are perfect for interactive learning and grabbing a bite to eat.

Exploring Study Spaces in Newcastle City Centre

Beyond the university campus, Newcastle city centre offers numerous study spots where you can study. Here are a couple of notable options:

The Lit and Phil: Established in 1793, The Literary and Philosophical Society is one of Newcastle’s hidden gems. This historical library provides a calm atmosphere perfect for deep study sessions.

Newcastle City Library: Situated in the heart of the city, the Newcastle City Library offers a modern space for studying. It features designated study areas, free Wi-Fi, and an extensive collection of resources to support your research.

Coffee shops: My top recommendations are Pink Lane Coffee – it has a cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, and a range of specialty coffees and offers a great spot to settle in and focus on your studies. Quay Ingredient, nestled near the Quayside is also great! The peaceful ambiance and free Wi-Fi make it a fantastic place to spend a few hours studying.

Setting Up a Home Study Space

Creating a productive study space at home is crucial, especially for those days when you prefer to study in familiar surroundings. Here are some things I did at home to create a great home study space.

Choose the right location: Select a quiet area with ample natural light, preferably near a window. Good lighting and a peaceful atmosphere can boost your concentration and overall mood.

Organise your essentials: Keep your study materials, textbooks, and stationery neatly arranged in organisers or drawers.

Personalise your space: I loved to add greenery or plants to bring something more refreshing!

Ergonomics: Invest in a comfortable chair and an adjustable desk if possible. Proper posture and ergonomics are vital for long study sessions to prevent back pain!

Whether you choose to explore the study spaces at Newcastle University, Newcastle city centre, or create your own space at home, finding a space that suits your needs and motivates you is essential. Take some time to find what makes you feel the most comfortable and engaged!
