We're excited to announce NCL in Action 2024/25, a year-long series of events uniting the Newcastle University community to explore the opportunities and challenges of modern technology and AI.

NCL in Action brings together Newcastle graduates, students, and colleagues around the world to take action and create positive change. This year, the university community will be invited to come together to work to ensure the benefits of technology are accessible to all, and that the industry grows in a fair and responsible way.

AI and technology have irrevocably transformed our world, from the way we communicate to how we consume information. As we navigate this rapidly evolving landscape, it is essential to consider both the opportunities and challenges it presents. Newcastle University is at the forefront of exploring these complexities, and our NCL in Action programme invites you to join the conversation.

AI is no longer a concept confined to science fiction. It's a tangible force driving innovation across industries. In healthcare, AI-powered diagnostics are revolutionising patient care, enabling earlier detection of diseases and personalised treatment plans.

Education is being transformed through AI-driven tools that offer tailored learning experiences, making education more accessible and engaging. The economy is undergoing a seismic shift as automation and AI create new job opportunities while demanding a workforce equipped with future-focused skills.

Beyond these broad impacts, AI is enriching our daily lives. Smart homes, virtual assistants, and personalised recommendations are just a few examples of how technology is enhancing convenience and efficiency. Even in sustainability, AI is playing a crucial role, from optimising energy consumption to advancing agricultural practices like vertical farming.

Newcastle University is committed to harnessing the power of AI for the benefit of society. Our researchers are at the forefront of groundbreaking initiatives, such as developing "virtual biopsies" for cancer treatment, creating energy-efficient systems, and exploring the potential of deep learning for marine mammal conservation.

We also recognise the importance of ethical considerations in AI development. Our focus on responsible AI ensures that technology is used for good, minimising biases and protecting privacy. We provide resources and guidance to help our community understand and navigate the complexities of this rapidly evolving field.
