Alison and Peter Smithson (1928-1993 and 1923-2003) were central figures in post-war architecture, included in the single volume histories of the field. They met at what is now Newcastle University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, then King’s College, Durham.
Thomas Sharp (1901-1978) was a central figure in town planning in the mid-twentieth century. The concepts he developed in his writings and plans have been of enduring significance and influence on thinking about planning and design for both practitioners and academics.
Terry Farrell is Director of Farrells, a firm of masterplanners and architects with offices in London, Hong Kong and Shanghai. He is one of the world’s most influential architects, planners and urban designers.
Since graduating from his BA Architecture at Newcastle University, George has become a fully qualified architect (completing his MArch at The Bartlett), creative director of George Clarke + Partners, and a founder of TV production company Amazing Productions.
The Matrix Co-operative was a pioneer in engaging feminism and architecture in the 1980s and ‘90s. It was an umbrella organisation tackling questions of women and the built environment through exhibitions, publications, education, a technical aid centre, and design practice.
