9 November 2022
The 6th International Conference of Critical Heritage Studies will take place over 4th - 7th December 2022 in Santiago, Chile.
The conference’s overarching theme will be Interculturalities. This concept implies seeking out and initiating dialogue among diverse cultural and social-economic actors, creating a polyphonic and palimpsestic dynamic that facilitates our interaction as a social fabric and our ability to understand one another. From this perspective, we recognize the existence of conflicting positions and the power inequalities that operate therein.
Niki Black will be presenting her paper, titled “Bitter-Sweet Cultures: honey-gatherers, landscape and change in the Sundarbans, GBM Delta”, presents research as part of the Living Deltas Hub, conducted with academic colleagues and delta-based artists in the UK, India and Bangladesh. The hub uses creative methods working collaboratively with Sundarban communities, focusing on the cultural and spiritual practices of honey gathering and the worship of Bonbibi, to better understand the relationships between landscape, human and non-human inhabitants. They examine how these cultural practices are impacted by climate change and their contribution to sustainable delta futures.
