Postgraduate Research in GURU
The Global Urban Research Unit welcomes applications from prospective MPhil and PhD students.
The Economic and Social Research Council recognises our School as a training outlet. We offer a lively postgraduate research environment.
We welcome applications from students in any of our areas of research expertise but particularly in our core research themes:
- people, place and politics
- infrastructure and digital technologies
- identities, culture and heritage
- environmental planning, assessment and management
- urban design and human flourishing
You can study on a full-time or part-time basis for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

We assign all students two supervisors who will have expertise in your chosen area of research. You'll gain a lot from regular meetings with your supervisors.
As a full-time postgraduate research student, you will also receive:

- support for attending conferences
- access to printing and photocopying facilities
- access to the University's award-winning library
Postgraduate culture
Our PhD students enjoy an interdisciplinary and dynamic research culture. This culture reaches the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and GURU.
You will benefit from:
- the School seminar series
- mini-conferences
- Researcher Education and Development
- a dedicated space for less formal interaction
