Project Title

Collaging Nicosia: The Fragmentation, Remaking and (Re)perception of Contested Spaces

Project Description

The research aims to investigate the potential of using of collage as a creative practice to engage with contested spaces. It presents an exploratory framework where collage serves as a dynamic medium, combining diverse elements and perspectives inherent in such environments. The study uses the context of Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus, as a testing ground. Through a series of five collage-making stages—descriptive, interpretative, dialogical, imaginative, and spatial—this research methodically probes how collage can enrich understanding of contested spaces and help to reimagine the city. It challenges conventional approaches by leveraging the unbounded nature of collage, inviting continuous experimentation and dialogue. The project offers an alternative approach to interacting with contested spaces often characterised by conflict, division, and the struggle for coexistence, proposing collage not just as an artistic tool but as a versatile medium for academic inquiry and urban reinterpretation.
