Minki Sung

About me

Minki, currently a PhD researcher in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, possesses a research interest in exploring the nuanced roles of heritage and its broader societal impacts. Prior to embarking on his doctoral journey, he served as a MA researcher at Myongji University, where his primary focus was on delving into the intricate aspects of heritage and its significance in society. His academic background includes an MA in International Cultural Heritage Management from Durham University and another MA in museum and archival studies from Myongji University in Seoul. Minki's professional journey has encompassed diverse roles, including administrative and research internships, research assistantships, archivist positions, and public affairs officer roles.

Research Interest

His research focuses on conservation planning, spatial analysis of specific social phenomena, and the study of social capital. Employing a comparative, interdisciplinary, and multimethodological approach, he combines various research methods, including participant observation, in-depth qualitative interviews, archival research, thematic analysis, survey techniques, and statistical modelling. In his quantitative research, he utilises both primary data collected through small and mid-size online surveys and secondary data sourced from high-quality national databases.

Project Title

Understanding urban heritage sites’ values

Project Description

Drawing on the conceptualisation of power as an ability of resource mobilisation, Minki will analyse this case through the different forms of power exercise based on interviews with essential stakeholders, such as the central, local, and district governments’ heritage officials, government heritage researchers, town community leaders, and heritage academics. Minki aims to answer the research question: For whom and how is heritage mobilised and valued through the lens of power?
