Niki-Marie Jansson

About me

Trained and practicing as an architect, I am interested in pursuing process-oriented and materially-conscious approaches towards sustainable building practice. My research to date has focused on innovating in stone and masonry construction processes, investigating traditional, contemporary and emerging techniques of practice. I simultaneously co-lead an MArch design studio with Dr Christos Kakalis at Newcastle School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, which investigates vernacular architecture as a landscaping process, through the twin lenses of material and placemaking. I support mentorship initiatives and am a visiting tutor and critic at several London universities.

Project Title

Holistic Masonry Construction: A Specification Framework for Re-assigning Value

Project Description

Through holistic systems thinking, the research aims to develop techniques for specifying indigenous stone types in "whole" masonry constructional assemblies. It will reframe the way in which we interpret, value, design and specify these assemblies, in attempt to advance whole-life environmental performance of new-build dwellings. The work builds on my masters thesis undertaken at the Bartlett School of Architecture (2017–19), which developed a case for load-bearing masonry construction as a holistically sustainable alternative to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).
