Project Title

Architecture of a Critical Edge: Knowledge Making and Geopolitics for a Modern Chinese Architecture of Guangzhou (1949-1989)

Project Description

Like many other regions in the 20th century, on the brink of changing political powers, Chinese society was faced with the dilemma of balancing identity issues rooted in the past and the requirements of social progress towards the future. In response to these circumstances, Lingnan Architecture, as a regional strategy, was manufactured and promoted. The realization of this concept was greatly influenced by the efforts of architects with transnational backgrounds, as well as their networks. The research aims to create an interconnected view in reading the history of modern Chinese architecture.
