Master of Landscape Architecture
The Master of Landscape Architecture focusses on the theories, methods and practice of landscape architecture, equipping you for practice in a landscape related discipline.
Landscape architects create and manage the landscapes we live and work in. They plan and design places. This ranges from the private garden to the urban square and the city region.
The Master of Landscape Architecture is a two-year full-time postgraduate conversion course. It's suitable for:
- graduates in other disciplines who wish to qualify and work as professional landscape architects
- those with international landscape qualifications who wish to pursue professional studies in the UK

I thoroughly enjoyed my two years studying the MLA at Newcastle University and couldn’t have wished for a better experience. The course consists of wide range of exciting projects and interesting topics that are relevant to the field as well as prepare you exceptionally well for life after you graduate. One key skill that I have found to be valuable within my career so far is creativity and the attention to detail. The course enables you to explore all design ideas whilst also ensuring the design is accurate, high quality and to scale.
In addition, the facilities and studio spaces provide a warm and friendly environment where I really enjoyed sharing ideas and learning from my peers. The tutors could not have been more helpful and are always there to answer any questions or point you in the right direction.
Overall, if you would like to study Landscape Architecture at Newcastle, I would greatly recommend it!!
Estee Tsoi, Landscape Designer at Ryder Architecture
It is a great honour for me to be part of the first graduate of this program in 2022. Looking back, I just want to say thank you to every teaching staff in this course trying very hard for leading us to resist the obstacles of teaching and learning during the pandemic.
Since I graduated from this course, I joined Ryder architecture in their London office to become a graduate landscape architect in that part of the team. The MLA course has been really valuable to my career. Especially now I am on my pathway to chartership under Landscape Institute. I believe the knowledge and network I have earned in this course allowed me to better adapt to the working environment and a great help on becoming a chartered landscape architect in the future.
Jake McClay, Landscape Designer at Ryder Architecture
After finishing my undergrad in Architecture & Urban Planning, I was eager to continue my educational journey and develop upon the design principles which resonated with me the most, particularly sustainable development and design. From the outset, Landscape Architecture stood out as a gateway into this subgenre of design, which turned out to be just a small drop in the ocean of insight into our urban environment, and the roles in which a landscape designer has to play its development and preservation. Just weeks after the completion of my Masters, I was able to secure the role of a Landscape Designer at Ryder Architecture, where I continue to learn about and practice the sustainable principles taught to me during my time at Newcastle University.

Studying the Master in Landscape Architecture (MLA) has taught me valuable lessons and has prepared me for what to expect after graduation. Every module was different and full of interesting elements to learn from. The tutors were helpful and have always showed us the right way with useful guidance. External guest tutors have also shared their expertise from working on real projects. Learning about history/heritage, specific design strategies, planting and law were beneficial lessons for my current job as a Landscape designer. Over all, each module had something to take on into my current job.
