Promoting gender diversity in research and academia

Students in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Newcastle University is a proud member of the Athena Swan Charter, which continues to recognise employment practices which promote gender equality.

The Charter was established by the Equality Challenge Unit in 2005 to combat the under representation of women working in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM).  In May 2015 the Charter expanded to include arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law.  The Charter now also covers the career progression of Professional Support and Technical staff working in the Higher Education sector.

We are one of a small number of UK universities in the UK to hold an Athena Swan Silver award demonstrating the impact of our activties.

Thirteen academic units also hold Athena Swan departmental awards.
