Centre for Behaviour

From individuals to complex groups and institutions, everything comes down to behaviour.

Our behaviour – how we interact with each other and our environments – shapes every aspect of our lives, from health and wellbeing to industry and politics.

An understanding of behaviour is essential when grappling with our place in the wider world. Our research aims to support a sustainable future and expand our appreciation of what it means to be human.

As the world grows increasingly complex, traditional disciplinary boundaries in the study of behaviour are limiting. Our diverse group of cross-disciplinary researchers and external partners are leading an expansion into new, impactful and socially-just ways of exploring behaviour.

Who we are

The Newcastle Centre of Research Excellence in Behaviour spans the entire university, drawing on experts in human and non-human behaviour to explore individual differences, as well as emergent group and institutional behaviours.

We approach behaviour from a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives, with expertise in everything from animal welfare and sociology to complex systems.

Our researchers work across all three faculties in the university:

  • Faculty of Medical Sciences
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Science, Agriculture and Engineering

We also draw on central expertise in organisational development and research culture.

Our diverse group of cross-disciplinary researchers and external partners are leading the development of new, impactful, and socially-just ways of exploring behaviour.

What makes us unique

Our centre is unique in both the breadth and depth of its expertise. Ranging across a broad array of subject disciplines, we have a deep commitment to:

  • rigorous methodology
  • cutting-edge theory
  • creating real impact outside of the university

Our focus on depth in these foundational areas allows us to maintain disciplinary diversity within the centre. We provide critical perspectives and new approaches to long-standing challenges in the study of behaviour.

Our mission

The Behaviour NUCoRE leads national and international conversations about behaviour, developing nuanced and impactful insights from a broad interdisciplinary foundation.

Our centre provides a creative and collaborative environment, where academic researchers can work with both the private and public sectors to develop solutions to key societal challenges.

Through this work, we aim to shape and inspire the next generation of researchers in behaviour.
