Dr Naqvi leads a team in Multimodal Signal Processing and AI within the ISC Group. His research contributions have been in human action, activity and behaviour analysis, multiple target detection, localization and tracking, accoustic signal enhancement and separation with applications in homeland security, smart healthcare systems and future autonomous systems. 

He also leads the IS Lab, a unique multi-sensor state-of-the-art research facility developed from the £0.75M funding from NU Vice-Chancellor’s office as part of the University’s £30M Research Investment Fund. NU has an excellent standing in Engineering and the Investment of £70M for Engineering at NU is already underway (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/who-we-are/stephenson/future/).

He also successfully contributed to the projects: Multi-Modal Blind Source Separation Algorithms (EPSRC, PhD); Audio and Video Based Speech Separation for Multiple Moving Sources Within a Room Environment (EPSRC, based on the findings in his PhD and PDRA); Signal Processing Solutions for the Networked Battlespace (EPSRC, CI); Multimodal Wide Area Surveillance (Thales, iCASE Award, PI); and Multimodal Data Processing for Automated Livestock Disease Monitoring and Environment Control System (BBSRC, PI).

Multimodal Signal and Information Processing for seeking a window into human mind and mental state (Artificial Intelligence) for future autonomous systems is the main engineering challenge of his research.

Reserach/Funding:

Mental Health Early Diagonosis/AI: Dr Naqvi recently developed collaborations with Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) at NU and National Health Services (NHS) to contribute interdisciplinary (Engineering and Medical) AI solutions on Early Diagnosis of Mental Health. The Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS (CNTW-NHS) Foundation Trust is one of the largest mental health and disability Trusts in England. He is recently leading a knowledge transfer “Intelligent Sensing in ADHD Trial (ISAT)” and also contributing Multimodal ADHD Dataset and AI with the North-East of England Lead ADHD Consultant and the CNTW-NHS Foundation Trust.

Security and Surveillance: He was one of the key staff members in the LSSCN consortium led by Newcastle University within the UDRC Phase II. He was also Co-I in the EPSRC funded project “Signal Processing Solutions for the Networked Battlespace, £3.6M, and the business partners were Dstl, Thales, BAE Systems, and QinetiQ. He also initiated work with Thales delivered “Multimodal Wide Area Surveillance”, project. And now working with defence industry to transfer the knowledge on low-energy and ready-to-use explainable AI-based solutions for downstream-tasks such as vessels behaviour prediction, monitoring, anomaly, and threat detection.

Explainable AI. One of the recent revolutions in S&T and the availability of big multi-sensor data also challenged the experts to transform the human life with AI. The recent advances in AI are, mainly, data driven and it’s our (experts in academia) responsibility to not rely on machine learning/deep learning/AI that is not fully transparent to reveal how the decisions are made and which information from the data (signals) is considered (black-box problem). When decisions can make the difference between life and death or between intervention and non-intervention (e.g., above mentioned, defence (MoD) and healthcare (NHS) applications), it is crucial to rely on explainable AI. Fundamentally, Signal Processing (SP) can better exploit the physics of the multi-sensor signals to extract reliable-information (Engineering approach), opposite to the conventional raw data-grilling, in-common-nowadays, and hence can yield SP led Explainable AI.
