Ellie recounts her various industry roles since graduating with a BSc in Food and Human Nutrition.
Nutritionist
Having always loved food, I chose to study Nutrition at university with the hope of turning my hobby into a career. My placement year opened my eyes to all the amazing jobs that can be found in the food industry, so this is something I would recommend to anyone on this course. I was also able to complete my dissertation in association with the company I worked for on my placement year. I loved everything about my time in Newcastle and feel lucky I was able to study in such an incredible city.
After graduating, I moved to Leeds and worked at Quorn Foods. My first role was running a consumer research panel, gathering feedback on new and existing products from real customers. My role then evolved into a Consumer Sensory Scientist, where I was able to build on the sensory science theory I had learnt at university, working as part of the product development process to analyse and improve the taste and texture of foods.
After a few years at Quorn, I moved to Asda to be a Nutritionist. This is where I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained while studying to real life settings. It’s also been great to attend conferences and connect with my old lecturers. One thing I love about working in Nutrition is that no two days are the same. One day you may be working with government to shape policy, then creating content on health for social media, then working with product teams to make products healthier. It’s great to work in a supermarket and know that you can have a big impact on people’s health!
