Roisin is a qualified dietitian with experience in private practice, third sector and academia. Working within the third sector Roisin has developed and run a dietetic service in a homeless and vulnerable adults charity and has also developed and run the nutritional education programme at Maggies cancer charity in Glasgow. From conducting research within the homeless and vulnerable adults charity on the barriers to accessing health care (with a nutrition focus), Roisin helped develop and run the training kitchen boosting practical skills and nutrition knowledge (working with ex offenders, those recovering from addiction and those experiencing poor mental well being). With the aim of reducing health inequalities targeted nutrition courses and training were developed and rolled out to staff members and qualifying members of the public. Roisin gained her advanced diploma in food hygiene with the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland, meaning service users not only improved their nutritional knowledge but gained qualifications that would enable future opportunities (cooking, nutrition and food hygiene qualifications).
Education has been a key component of Roisin's career and whilst working in the third sector she took on a contract with Glasgow Caledonian University as a clinical demonstrator and guest lecturer. This post propelled Roisin's interest in academia and led to her taking on a full time lecturing position at Robert Gorgon University where she achieved fellowship status (FHEA) with Advanced HE.
Taking on the post in Newcastle University Roisin aims to provide a positive and impactful learning environment that will produce excellent future dietitians and nutritionists. She also hopes to continue to work at reducing health inequalities and improve third sector access to qualified nutrition experts such as dietitians and registered nutritionists. Other area's of interest include oncology, gut health, mental well being and public health.
