Research

We work across academic disciplines and with industry partners to produce impactful research. We aim to:

  • address global financial challenges
  • create meaningful insights
  • produce innovative solutions
  • deliver practical outcomes
  • advance knowledge in the field of finance

We explore critical issues like financial stability, the low-carbon transition, and behavioural finance.

Research collaboration and engagement

Building a strong foundation in collaboration is central to our research. Our expterise is highly valued. They have strong connections with businesses, policymakers, and international organisations, and provide academic insights and advice. These partnerships ensure our research helps to solve real-world financial challenges.

Recent collaborations include:

Sustainable Finance international collaboration

Dr Periklis Boumparis worked with colleagues from Liverpool and the University of South Carolina. They examined how sovereign rating downgrades impact firms' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies. Their findings highlight significant impacts on corporate sustainability practices, particularly in shareholder-centric countries.

Estimating and forecasting skewness

Jiayu Jin worked in partnership with the University of Manchester. They developed advanced methods to estimate and forecast skewness in asset returns. This work, using S&P 500 options data, offers new insights into risk-neutral skewness over time.

Earnings quality and bank capital

Dr Mamiza Haq collaborated with academics from Zurich and Dongbei. They investigated how variations in countercyclical capital buffers across countries influence bank earnings quality. This has implications for earnings persistence, cash flow predictability, and financial stability.

Macroeconomic implications of low-carbon energy transitions

Dr Vu Trinh leads an international project assessing the economic impacts of energy transitions, including carbon pricing, in Vietnam.

These partnerships and projects reflect our commitment to shaping the future of finance, addressing societal needs, and contributing to global development.

Further information on these and other research projects and collaborations can be found on the finance group research page.
