What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted to have a creative outlet and share my love of vintage clothing and fabrics with people. I'm also passionate about onshoring manufacturing back to the UK so we only work with local factories and makers.
What is the best part of running your own business?
The freedom, flexibility and creative satisfaction of seeing your own designs coming to life!
What is the biggest challenge you have faced running your own business and how did you overcome it?
The external events of Brexit, COVID and now the cost of living crisis. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, always think about how you can cultivate marketable skills, and embrace the multi-hyphenate life!
What is your 5 year vision for the business?
I'd love to expand into ready-to-wear womenswear... plans are already underway!
What is the one piece of advice you would give to anyone wanting to start their own business?
Be prepared to work and be flexible with your vision. You have to work WITH the market, not against it!
Were there any key moments during your time at NUBS which ignited your entrepreneurial spirit?
My lecturer Mo O'Toole was such an inspiration during my time at NUBS. She was so personable and forthcoming and has a successful business in wine as well as being an academic.
The ongoing relationships I have with the team at Start Up are also a testament to how continuously supportive and kind they are, even years after graduation!
About Studio Courtenay
I founded Studio Courtenay when I graduated in 2016, with help from Newcastle University's Start Up team!
We're a sustainable British-made fashion & homeware brand. We're based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and employ four people at the moment. We only use deadstock fabrics to create our pieces. They're fabrics that have been sitting around in warehouses, on factory floors, or tucked away in seamstress' storage cupboards. This means that we don't contribute to the harmful effects of producing virgin raw materials.
