Spring achievements for research colleagues

We cover a selection of awards, publications and highlights from a successful spring for our research community.

11 April 2025

As Spring Break begins, we are reflecting on a successful few weeks for Newcastle University Business School. Achievements include publications and awards from across the subject groups. Our Postgraduate Research students are also recognised for their impactful work. A selection of colleague accomplishments are highlighted below.

Publications

Giorgio Fazio, Sara Maioli and Nirat Rujimora, whose paper “Building back greener, levelling-up or both? An assessment of the economic and environmental efficiency transition of UK regions” was published in Papers in Regional Science, has been selected as the winner of the 2025 Martin Beckmann Award.

Professor Klaus Schoefer and his co-authors, whose paper titled “An Investigation of Culture’s Influence on New Technology Adoption: The Case of Mobile Payment” has been accepted for publication in the International Marketing Review.

Awards

Professor Darren Duxbury, who has received a Wiley award for his paper “Investor sentiment and the risk-return relation: A two-in-one approach” in the European Financial Management Journal. The paper is in the top ten of most-cited papers published by the journal in 2023. The paper was available online mid-May 2023 and published in print in 2024.

NAMAWARDS

Monash University, Melbourne (Aus) – Newcastle University (UK) Collaborative Grants Scheme, NAMAWARDS, is an initiative to provide funding for small projects to support international research collaboration between the two institutions. The grants are intended to fund collaborative projects, with the potential for scaling up to secure greater funding through various research funding bodies, as well as producing high quality joint publications.

Congratulations to Dr Irene Chu and Dr Haiyan Lu for being awarded a NAMAAWARD for their project titled “Digital inclusivity: Advancing equality, diversity, and social inclusion”. This project aims to explore the existing barriers and challenges faced by digitally marginalised groups in both the UK and Australia. The project also explores how digital inclusivity can be further advanced through policy interventions, equality integration, and social inclusion in digital practices, ensuring that technology serves as a tool for empowerment rather than exclusion.

Congratulations to Dr Erwei (David) Xiang and Professor Susan Chilton for being awarded a NAMAAWARD for their project on biodiversity disclosure and environmental pressure, which leverages advanced generative AI and a mixed-methods approach.

Postgraduate Research

He Zhu, co-supervised by Dr Jiayao Hu and Professor Ying Yang, has had their article 'Towards a circular supply chain for retired electric vehicle batteries: A systematic literature review’ published in the International Journal of Production Economics.

Ya Gao (PhD candidate in Finance), co-supervised by Dr Vu Trinh and Professor Bartosz Gebka, has been recognised as one of the Best Reviewers of 2024 - Business Research Quarterly (BRQ), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Spanish Academy of Management (ACED).
