Dr Kirsty Munro
Lecturer in Accounting
Kirsty recently joined Newcastle University Business School in July 2022 as a Lecturer in Accounting and Finance.
She previously held a position at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University for over 12 years were she began her career as a graduate tutor specialising in the teaching of audit, financial accounting, CSR, ethics and corporate governance at various levels from undergraduate to MBA. During her time at Northumbria Kirsty also completed a PhD in 2014, titled 'Stakeholder perceptions of environmental reporting' and has a keen interest in pedagogic in particular the integration of more interactive teaching methods within accounting. Her recent work has looked at the use of practitioners within audit as well as the creation and dissemination of a simulation as a way in which to increase student satisfaction and performance.
Kirsty was a member of the leadership team for the department of Accounting and financial management and held the position of Director of employability as well as running the BA/BSc Accounting programme for a number of years. These roles involved ensuring quality of both teaching and assessment in line with professional bodies as well as accreditation requirements of AACSB. In addition to her roles within the university Kirsty is also an external examiner for a number of institutions and a member of the board for the Audit and Assurance BAFA specialist group.
Her teaching interests specialise in audit and financial reporting and she is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Kirsty completed her PhD in 2014 exploring the use and usefulness of environmental reporting from a stakeholder perspective, particularly focusing on NGOs.
Kirsty has also had a number of pedagogic publications focused within the audit area including;
'Corporate Associate Partnerships: Practitioners' Involvement in the Delivery of an Auditing Course based on a Case Study: A Teaching Resource' and,
'Simulation - is it all worth it? The impact of simulation from the perspective of accounting students'
Research interests: Accounting Education, interactive teaching methods, skills mismatch in auditing, accountability.
