PROFILE
I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Finance at Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) and serve as the Research, Scholarship, and Impact Co-Lead for the Finance Subject Group. I also co-lead the research cluster on finance, governance, and sustainability and am Deputy Director of the Finance and Banking Network at AVSE Global. My work has been recognised with awards such as "Outstanding Researcher of the Year" at NUBS (2022) and AVSE Global’s "Interstellar" award (2023). I've also been nominated for multiple Education Awards, including "Outstanding Contribution to Teaching" (2023) and "Research Supervisor of the Year" (2024).
My academic research is centred on corporate governance and sustainable finance, having published books and research articles in reputable journals (AJG2021:4/3*; ABDC:A*/A) such as the British Journal of Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Financial Stability, Energy Economics, European Journal of Finance, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, International Review of Financial Analysis, International Journal of Finance and Economics, Accounting Forum, Abacus, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, and Business Strategy and the Environment. I was recently appointed as an Associate Editor (Communications) for the British Journal of Management (AJG2021:4*) and the International Journal of Management Reviews (AJG2021:3*). I also serve as an Executive Member of the Corporate Governance Special Interest Group - the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA).
I have significant editorial experience, demonstrating my academic leadership. I have served on editorial boards and as a referee for numerous prestigious journals. My roles have included Section Editor, Associate Editor, Guest Editor, Book Editor, and Advisory Board Member. Currently, I am the co-guest editor for the special issue on "Climate Governance, Green Innovation, and Investment Policies" in the International Review of Economics and Finance. I am also the lead guest editor for the new special issue titled "Engaging with AI Technologies to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: Implications for Strategic Management and Leadership" in the International Journal of Educational Management. Additionally, I am the lead editor of the forthcoming book "The Future of Accounting and Finance - Embracing Technology, Digitalisation, Sustainability, Education, and Employability" to be published by Springer (2025). Previously, I successfully edited the book "Climate Governance and Corporate Eco-innovation," published by Springer in 2024.
My research activities have successfully secured over US$250,000 or £200,000 in grants and funding. Recently, I was awarded approximately US$115,000 (or £90,000) (Phase 1 Lead) from the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme's Flexible Research Fund (FRF) for the project "Macroeconomic Implications of Transitions to Low-Carbon Energy in Vietnam," which will run from 2024 to 2025 and led by Finance and Banking Network (AVSE Global). Additionally, a collaborative climate risk project received funding of approximately US$38,000 (or £30,000) through Nafosted (British Academy - Newton Fund: Reciprocal Schemes). This project involves teams from the UK (Newcastle University and the University of Bristol) and Vietnam, led by UEH University. As the principal investigator at NUBS, I led a consultancy project titled "Responsible Business Conduct and Sustainable Investment in ASEAN" which was funded by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for AVSE Global, receiving approximately US$30,000 (or £25,000). This initiative produced a key report that significantly advanced sustainable business practices in the ASEAN region. In addition to research funding, I have generated regular academically professional service income of $2,000 per year for long-term editing services, amounting to about US$6,000 to date for NUBS. I have also successfully attracted and currently supervise PhD students who are funded by their respective countries or institutions. My ongoing collaborations include partnerships with colleagues from esteemed institutions such as the University of Oxford and the University of Huddersfield, as well as numerous industry partners. We are pursuing large-scale interdisciplinary funding bids for projects focused on sustainability.
My research has made a significant impact within the academic community, evidenced by the growing citations, downloads, and popularity of my work in various journals. For instance, one of my papers has consistently ranked among the most cited, downloaded, and popular articles in the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions, and Money (AJG2021:3*) since 2018. Similarly, another paper has been among the most cited in the European Journal of Finance (AJG2021:3*) from 2020 to 2022. P-Rank has named me among the top 1000 best-ranked authors within the UK (#243 ABS-based since 2022 and #291 since 2020) and Europe. My research findings have been presented at prestigious conferences, including the IFABS Oxford Conference, the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), the Financial Management Association (FMA), and the European Accounting Association (EAA). These findings have also been disseminated by international organisations such as the OECD and WHO.
As a qualified educator, I have been selected to join the Advisory Group of the QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) for the review of the 'Finance' Subject Benchmark Statement 2024-25. At Newcastle University, I embody my administrative, leadership, and citizenship roles by taking on a range of responsibilities, typically Research, Scholarship and Impact Co-Lead of Finance Subject Group, and Research Cluster Co-Lead. I am also a Fellow of the NUBS Funding Academy, a member of the Undergraduate Program Review Committee, the PhD Annual Progression Panel, and the Stage 2 Coordinator of the undergraduate program. I have also mentored junior and early-career colleagues in both research and teaching. Additionally, I have participated in staff recruitment interviews and chaired staff recruitment presentations. I served as the Deputy Chair of the Board of Examiners for the 2020/21 academic year.

PHD RESEARCH SUPERVISION
I am currently welcoming applications from prospective PhD students with a strong academic background and an outstanding research proposal in the following areas: corporate governance, sustainable finance, sustainable governance, corporate finance, banking, ESG, and related fields in finance.
1. Yudian Chen, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 3)
Yudian is a third-year PhD student under my primary supervision. Her research focuses on three critical areas: sustainable governance, eco-innovation, and corporate performance. Briefly, Yudian investigates the relationship between sustainable practices and corporate performance, providing empirical evidence on how sustainability initiatives influence financial and non-financial outcomes. Her work contributes valuable insights to the growing body of literature on sustainability, offering practical implications for both academia and industry.
2. Ya Gao, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)
Ya is a fourth-year PhD student working under my primary supervision. Her research is centred on three key areas: political connections, sustainable practices, and corporate performance. Briefly, Ya investigates how political connections influence corporate strategies, particularly in the adoption of sustainable practices, and how these practices, in turn, impact corporate performance. Her work aims to provide a deeper understanding of the ways in which political and environmental factors shape business outcomes, offering valuable insights for both academia and industry.
3. Li Jinghui, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)

Hend's research is particularly relevant in today's business environment, where the integration of ethical practices and financial performance is increasingly scrutinised. Her findings are expected to provide valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners in the field.
5. Youping Jia, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)
