PROFILE


I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Finance at Newcastle University Business School (NUBS), where I also serve as Research, Scholarship, and Impact Co-Lead for the Finance Subject Group. In addition, I am Deputy Director of the Finance and Banking Network at AVSE Global and an Executive Member of the Corporate Governance Special Interest Group at the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA). My research focuses on Sustainable Finance & Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Finance, with several books and high-impact journal publications (AJG 4/3*, ABDC A*/A), including the British Journal of Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Financial Review, Journal of Financial Stability, Energy Economics, European Journal of Finance, and Business Strategy and the Environment, among others. One of my current key projects focuses on human capital–driven artificial intelligence investments and their impact on corporate financial activities.

I currently serve as Associate Editor (Communications) for the British Journal of Management and the International Journal of Management Reviews. I have also held various editorial and advisory roles—Section Editor, Associate Editor, Guest Editor, Book Editor, and Referee—for some scholarly peer-reviewed journals such as Business Research Quarterly. Presently, I am co-editing a special issue on Climate Governance, Green Innovation, and Investment Policies (International Review of Economics and Finance) and leading another on Artificial Intelligence and the Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education (International Journal of Educational Management). I am also the editor of the forthcoming book The Future of Accounting and Finance: Embracing Technology, Digitalisation, Sustainability, Education, and Employability (Springer, 2025), following my earlier edited volume Climate Governance and Corporate Eco-innovation (Springer, 2024).

I have secured over US$250,000 (£200,000) in research funding to date. Recently, I was awarded US$115,000 (£90,000) as Phase 1 Lead for a Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) project on the macroeconomic impacts of low-carbon transitions in Vietnam (2024–2025), led by AVSE Global. I also co-lead a climate risk project funded by Nafosted (British Academy - Newton Fund: Reciprocal Schemes), involving partners in the UK and Vietnam. As Principal Investigator at NUBS, I led a consultancy project on responsible investment in ASEAN, funded by the OECD (US$30,000/£25,000), which produced a key policy report. I also generate ongoing academic service income (approx. US$13,500 over 2022–2027) through editorial work. I currently supervise funded PhD students and collaborate with leading academics and institutions, including the University of Oxford, University of Huddersfield, and various industry partners, on large-scale, interdisciplinary sustainability-focused research initiatives.

My research has gained strong academic recognition, with high citation and download rates. Notably, my papers have ranked among the most cited and downloaded in the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money and the European Journal of Finance (AJG 3*). P-Rank lists me among the top 1000 researchers in the UK and Europe (#243 UK since 2022). My work has been presented at leading conferences (IFABS, BAFA, FMA, EAA) and cited by organisations like the OECD and WHO.

As a qualified educator, I serve on the QAA Advisory Group for the 2024–25 review of the Finance Subject Benchmark Statement. At Newcastle University, I hold several leadership roles, including Research, Scholarship and Impact Co-Lead and Research Cluster Co-Lead. I’m a Fellow of the NUBS Funding Academy and contribute to program review, PhD supervision, and mentoring. I’ve also been active in recruitment and academic governance, including serving as Deputy Chair of the Board of Examiners in 2020/21.

My work has been recognised with awards such as "Outstanding Researcher of the Year" at NUBS (2022) and two AVSE Global’s "Interstellar" awards (2023 and 2024). I've also been nominated for multiple Education Awards, including "Outstanding Contribution to Teaching" (2023), "Research Supervisor of the Year" (2024), and "Outstanding Contribution to Teaching" (2025 - in progress).

PHD RESEARCH SUPERVISION

I am currently welcoming applications from prospective PhD students with a strong academic background and an outstanding research proposal in the following areas: corporate governance, sustainable finance, sustainable governance, corporate finance, banking, ESG, and related fields in finance.

1. Yudian Chen, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 3)

Yudian is a third-year PhD student under my primary supervision. Her research focuses on three critical areas: sustainable governance, eco-innovation, and corporate performance. Briefly, Yudian investigates the relationship between sustainable practices and corporate performance, providing empirical evidence on how sustainability initiatives influence financial and non-financial outcomes. Her work contributes valuable insights to the growing body of literature on sustainability, offering practical implications for both academia and industry.

Yudian Chen has been recognised as one of the Best Reviewers of 2024 by BRQ Business Research Quarterly (BRQ), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Spanish Academy of Management (ACEDE).

2. Ya Gao, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)

Ya is a fourth-year PhD student working under my primary supervision. Her research is centred on three key areas: political connections, sustainable practices, and corporate performance. Briefly, Ya investigates how political connections influence corporate strategies, particularly in the adoption of sustainable practices, and how these practices, in turn, impact corporate performance. Her work aims to provide a deeper understanding of the ways in which political and environmental factors shape business outcomes, offering valuable insights for both academia and industry.

Ya Gao has been recognised as one of the Best Reviewers of 2024 by BRQ Business Research Quarterly (BRQ), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Spanish Academy of Management (ACEDE).

3. Li Jinghui, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)

Jinghui (Garnet) is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of her dissertation, working under my co-supervision. Her research is focused on three pivotal areas: CEO leadership, organisational culture, and corporate performance. Throughout her doctoral journey, Jinghui has examined the complex interactions between leadership styles and corporate culture, and how these factors collectively influence organisational performance. Her work offers critical insights into the role of executive leadership in shaping company culture and driving business success, contributing valuable perspectives to both academic research and practical management strategies.

4. Hend Alajai, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)

Hend is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of her dissertation, working under my co-supervision. Her research is centered on three critical areas: earnings management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and corporate performance. Throughout her PhD journey, her work not only explores the individual impact of earnings management and CSR on corporate performance but also examines how these factors interplay to influence organisational outcomes. Hend's research is particularly relevant in today's business environment, where the integration of ethical practices and financial performance is increasingly scrutinised. Her findings are expected to provide valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners in the field.

5. Youping Jia, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4)

Youping is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of his dissertation, working under my co-supervision. His research focuses on three critical areas: CEO narcissism, risk, and corporate performance. Briefly, Youping examines how CEO narcissism influences risk-taking behaviour and, consequently, affects corporate performance. His research offers valuable insights into the role of executive personality traits in shaping business strategies and outcomes. The findings are anticipated to be of significant interest to both academics and industry professionals.
