Jo Wakeman OBE

Former Director, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
Jo led HMRC’s Large Business Compliance Directorate for 6 years until her retirement in July 2022. She has extensive experience in operational delivery, policy development, stakeholder management and business transformation during a public sector career spanning 35 years, working primarily in HMRC but including a 2-year secondment to HM Treasury.
Prior to appointment as Director of the Large Business team, Jo led HMRC’s compliance engagement with a number of UK business sectors including banking and oil and gas. And on the international stage, more recently Jo initiated multilateral engagement with other fiscal authorities to successfully develop a joint programme of large business tax compliance projects. She has also represented HMRC on the OECD’s Forum of Tax Administrators Gender Balance Network.
Jo was awarded an OBE for services to the Taxation of Financial Services in the 2016 Birthday Honours.
Jo enjoys a number of sports, and has represented the South and London in Masters Hockey. She is Chair of her allotment group and battles the elements and pests to coax veg from her inner-London plot!
