Global research and collaboration

Newcastle University Business School brings together faculty members from 33 countries. This reflects our commitment to producing knowledge with global relevance.

We actively engage in developing sustainable and responsible solutions to key global challenges. We do this through collaborative partnerships at local, national, and international levels.

Local collaboration

We work closely with colleagues across Newcastle University’s Centres of Research Excellence. We foster interdisciplinary research that is disseminated to key stakeholders, maximising its impact.

National engagement

Aligned with our core research themes, we lead the AHRC-funded Creative Policy and Evidence Centre (CEPEC). This shapes policies for the UK’s creative industries.

We also collaborate with policymakers in:

  • industry
  • civil society
  • both the UK and European Parliaments

We offer independent research evidence and policy recommendations.

International partnerships

Our research extends across borders. We have active collaborations with institutions such as Monash University (Australia) and Xiamen University (China). These partnerships ensure our research has a truly global reach and impact.

Our ground-breaking work makes significant improvements in the lives and wellbeing of many people. Our academics engage with businesses and communities, internationally, nationally, and regionally. Postgraduate research

Our PhD programmes develop scholars who advance academic knowledge and business practice. They will equip you with the skills you need to succeed in a knowledge-intensive environment.

We offer PhD study within several of our main research areas. There are five pathways:

Leadership

Associate Dean Research

The Associate Dean Research (ADR) provides inspirational and transformational strategic leadership. They:

  • shape and deliver the Business School’s Research and Scholarship strategy
  • foster an environment that encourages multidisciplinary, innovative, and impactful research . This is achieved through national and global research collaborations
  • actively support faculty members in producing high-quality research. This work addresses pressing economic and societal challenges
  • ensures the continued development of a vibrant and inclusive research culture. This involves facilitating cross-disciplinary partnerships and securing funding opportunities

Our current Associate Dean of Research is Professor Abigail Marks. She exemplifies these leadership qualities. Her vision and dedication strengthens the school’s research agenda, and broadens its impact across academia, industry, and policymaking.

Directors of Impact

Our Directors of Impact play a crucial role. They ensure that our research has tangible benefits for society, industry and policymaking. They provide strategic leadership in fostering impactful research. This research aligns with both the School’s key priorities and broader societal challenges.

Professor Louise Crawford and Dr Ana Lopes are our current Directors of Impact. They lead initiatives that maximise the real-world application of academic research. They work with faculty members to develop strategies which translate research into meaningful change. This ensures engagement at local, national, and international levels with:

  • policymakers
  • communities

Through their leadership, they enhance the visibility and societal relevance of research by:

  • facilitating knowledge exchange
  • influencing policy
  • driving collaborations

Their dedication strengthens the Business School’s commitment to producing research with lasting, positive impact.

Research Manager

As Research Manager, Dr Hannah Lynch supports the School’s research strategy. She ensures that research activities align with institutional priorities and external funding opportunities.

Hannah provides guidance on:

  • research development
  • grant applications
  • project management

She works closely with faculty members to facilitate high-quality research outputs.

Dr Lynch’s expertise in research administration enhances the School’s ability to:

  • secure funding
  • foster interdisciplinary collaborations
  • maximise the impact of its research initiatives
