Research collaborations

Research collaboration is central to our research practices and values. We support the pursuit of new knowledge and aim to change the world for the better.

We believe that it's only via collaboration that we can identify and address emerging challenges.

We work with local, national and international partners, including communities, participants and research. We aim to develop lasting relationships to grow a global research network.

We have a global reputation for inter-disciplinary research in areas such as:

  • the future of work
  • the environment
  • meaningful and productive working lives
  • rural enterprise and innovation
  • health economics
  • digital marketing
  • consumer behaviour
  • corporate governance
  • financial markets
  • management theory
  • supply chain management

Research themes

Our research themes highlight the broad areas where our work is making an impact. Each one offers an insight into the wide-ranging research happening across the school. They form a focus for research excellence and draw together researchers.

(Please note: these are emergent themes. They don't direct or organise our work, but they do help to present it in a more accessible way.)

Collaborating with business

We have unique breadth and depth in our research, due to the size and scope of operations. Our academics work with businesses and organisations for the benefit of research and societal impact.

Arrow programme

The Arrow Programme supports small businesses by removing barriers to research. We allow businesses to access funded innovation support from our research and services. We also work with organisations such as Vindolanda Trust as part of our KTP programme.

Business Partnerships

Our Business Partnerships team assist in developing relationships with businesses and organisations. They help to facilitate necessary relationships and conduct contractual negotiations.

Collaborating internationally

We're proud to have a global faculty, which reflects our international focus on creating knowledge. Our business knowledge and world-class research is international in nature, scope, and impact. We collaborate with academics and institutions globally to find solutions to real-world challenges.

We have established international projects and collaborations with key global partners. These partnerships engage with research and our colleagues to support a global reputation.

We have international visiting professors from across the globe, including Australia and Serbia.

We are also proud to host a diverse International Advisory Board.

NAMAWARDS - a joint funding programme

In 2021, Newcastle University signed a memorandum of understanding with Monash University in Australia. We aim to pave the way for an exciting collaborative partnership in research.

In September 2023, we launched the first collaborative funding scheme between our schools. The funding looks to fund co-created, meaningful and impactful research.

In 2024, colleagues shared project ideas in a workshop at Monash's campus in Prato, Italy. The team explored next steps and future funding opportunities. Following the pilot, we seek to establish a sustained and fruitful international partnership.

Collaborating on policy

We work with policy makers to ensure our research has an impact and makes a difference to society.

Creative PEC

We're proud to be the lead organisation for the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC).

The Creative PEC provide independent research and policy recommendations for the creative industries.

This collaborative effort involves several UK universities and research institutions.

Together, we examine various aspects of the creative economy through:

  • research projects
  • data analysis
  • knowledge exchange activities

Research centres

We're engaged in a number of Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence (NUCoREs).

They involve schools across the University, addressing societal challenges in an interdisciplinary way. They allow us to work innovatively and look for new solutions to challenges in society.

We also oversee the Centre for Research on Entrepreneurship, Wealth and Philanthropy (REWP).

REWP aims to help increase the scale, effectiveness and satisfactions of philanthropic giving in the UK and internationally.
