Economics research

Research in the Economics group is refreshingly broad. It spans macroeconomics and microeconomics; the applied and the theoretical; the contemporary and the historical; and a range of fields, countries, and methods.

The Economics group aspires to conduct research at the frontier of our discipline. A substantial portion of our research is also of relevance to other disciplines, such as politics, medicine, and history.

We strive to advance both theoretical and applied economics. We aim to produce research of interest and use to policymakers at various levels of government and in central banks, both within the UK and abroad.

Research themes

The research of our academics spans nearly all the principal fields within economics. We have particular focus in the areas of:

  • macroeconomics
  • microeconomics
  • behavioural economics
  • health economics
  • labour economics
  • economic development
  • economic history
  • industrial organisation

Community radio and women’s empowerment in India

  • Dr Tom Lane and Smriti Sharma - Newcastle University Business School
  • Pushkar Maitra and Rajesh Ramachandran - Monash University, Australia

This econometric and experimental project is based in India. It is a collaboration with researchers from Monash, a strategic partner of Newcastle University Business School. It is internally funded by the NAMAWARDS (Newcastle and Monash Awards). This is a funding collaboration set up between the two universities.

The project investigates the effects of community radio stations on female empowerment in rural areas. It utilises a combination of largescale datasets and fieldwork.
