Student Facilities

The Business School offers study spaces, specialist labs, social areas and more to support you on your journey to success. Our facilities are purpose-built with you in mind to ensure you reach your full potential.

Our buildings

Newcastle University Business School operates across two buildings:

  • the main Business School building
  • the Frederick Douglass Centre (FDC)

Many Business School students will be taught in both the Business School and the FDC. Both are purpose-built and include practical teaching and learning spaces, along with a range of facilities to foster your development and help you reach your full potential.

Building access and opening hours

Your Newcastle University Smartcard allows you to access spaces around our buildings and campus. You should carry this with you at all times.

Although teaching doesn't run into the evening, our buildings are accessible with your Smartcard after the building closes to the public. This ensures you have ample time for self-directed study, like tidying up your notes after a lecture or starting your next assignment.

Term-time opening hours

The main Business School building is open:

  • Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 21.00
  • Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00

The Frederick Douglass Centre is open:

  • Monday to Friday from 8.20 to 17.50

Teaching and learning spaces

We have a range of different spaces to foster learning for different types of learners. Prefer to study in a group? We have bookable rooms. Is a quiet space better for you? We have dedicated quiet rooms. Whatever your learning style, we've got spaces to help you.

Lecture theatres

There are four lecture theatres at the Business School and three at the FDC.

The lecture theatres provide open, bright spaces with comfortable seating. Capacities range from 120 to 215. Two of the theatres at the Frederick Douglass Centre can be combined to create a capacity of 750.

Teaching rooms

There are also many teaching rooms in both buildings, including one space for hybrid meetings, group work and seminars.

We're working hard to ensure our facilities continue to meet your needs. Some of our teaching rooms include upgraded AV facilities, provision for wireless presentation and Recap. All are designed to enhance your learning experience.

During your studies, you'll have many projects that require collaboration and group work. Many of our teaching spaces are suitable for group work.

We also have dedicated spaces for our:

  • MBA cohort
  • postgraduate learners
  • PhD students

You can find your lecturers and services staff, such as career and wellbeing advisers, in the same buildings as your teaching. This makes it easy to book an appointment with them if you need to.

We have excellent connections with Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) and there is a teaching space assigned to PWC activities.

Study spaces

Everyone has their own preferred way of studying, so it's important that there are a range of spaces to suit your needs and facilitate your learning. Our flexible and dedicated spaces will help your self-directed study and group assignments.

The Business School has three dedicated bookable student meeting spaces. These can be used for private study or group sessions. Spaces are also available at the FDC and can be booked at reception.

The FDC has a range of soft seating areas and booths for when you want to relax or socialise outside of your studies. Some booths also have a wall mounted screen to make group work or presentation practice easier.

IT clusters

During your time with us, you'll do a lot of work online, whether that's notetaking, researching, or writing an assignment. So we have lots of PC and open laptop spaces, including:

  • three PC clusters at the Business School
  • additional PC spaces and power outlets for laptops in the FDC

The Business School’s quick print facilities also allow for quick access to the internet and your desktop. Here you can print relevant material quickly before lectures and seminars.

Career Hub

We know that securing your future career is as important as your academic achievements.

Our Careers Consultants and Placement and Study Abroad team are here to help you get career ready. They can support you with your studies and future development, from CV assistance and placement opportunities to part-time employment.

The Career Hub is located on the ground floor of the Business School. The Hub offers drop ins during term time and we often run takeovers with employers here too. If you would prefer a private 1-to-1 session, you can make an appointment to meet a member of either team in room G.07.
