Undergraduate Study Abroad

Gain a global perspective. Studying abroad can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

What is study abroad?

Studying abroad helps you learn more about yourself, which is why a lot of our undergraduate degrees offer this opportunity.

It lets you see the world whilst enhancing your degree knowledge, helping you to:

  • build international networks
  • improve your language skills
  • increase confidence in working on an international scale
  • increase cultural awareness
  • gain valuable life skills not taught in the lecture theatre
  • develop a greater sense of independence

You'll study at one of our prestigious partner universities, deepening your academic learning while developing new skills. This will set you apart from other graduates. It provides you with the chance to:

  • travel
  • discover new cultures
  • meet new people
  • enhance your global perspective

We have a range of short-term and year-long international experiences for you.

You can choose to add an optional study abroad year between stages two and three. You can apply to study business-related modules as an exchange student at one of our partner universities.

Where can you study?

The Business School has a number of exchange partnerships with other business schools and schools of management across the world. You can study at one of our exchange partner institutions for a full academic year after stage two.

The Faculty and University also has several global exchange partners which consider applications from business students.

We review the list of exchange partners annually.

What you need to know

Costs

During your study abroad year, you'll pay reduced tuition fees to Newcastle University. You won’t pay tuition fees to the partner university as an exchange student. You are responsible for securing the relevant visa, and paying for:

  • accommodation
  • travel
  • living costs

You can find out more about student exchanges on the University Global Opportunites page.

Languages

Don’t speak another language? Don’t worry! Most of our partner universities teach in English.

Reflective module

During your study abroad year, you'll complete a module to help you reflect on your experience.

Qualifications

We'll recognise the experience in your degree title (eg BSc Hons Accounting and Finance with Study Abroad).

International Business Management BSc (N120/N121)

We recommend that students on this course complete a study abroad year or work placement. This will allow them to develop the language that they are studying as part of their degree.

This is applicable for students taking French/German/Spanish routes. Students on the Chinese language route have the opportunity to complete a study abroad year only.

Excluded courses

Study abroad is not available on some courses due to the unique structure of work placements. These courses are:

  • NN14 Business Accounting and Finance BSc
  • NN49 Accounting and Finance BSc

Shorter international experiences

We understand that a year abroad may not be an option for all students. We offer a range of short-term international experiences such as Summer Schools and Global Challenges. These opportunities vary year to year.

Summer Schools

Study at a partner university for up to six weeks. You'll usually focus on mastering an aspect of business which is of particular interest to you. This could be anything from cryptocurrency to football finance.

You will:

  • experience a different educational system
  • work with classmates from a diverse range of countries, backgrounds and cultures
  • develop key employability skills
  • gain a global mindset

You can secure opportunities at the end of Stage One, Two or Three, depending on the entry requirements for the Summer School. There are often bursaries to help support students taking part.

Global challenges

If you’re looking for a challenge, take part in a global competition. Show your skills and knowledge in a subject area and it could be your passport to global experience.

You will work across time zones and continents with students from some of our world-class international partner universities.

Gain an insight into what it’s like to work in a virtual team, something many global employers will need you to do daily.
