Our approach to teaching and learning is student-centred. We encourage all of our students to work with us on revising our curriculum so it reflects you and your needs. We also co-create activities to develop your professional and personal skills.

Recent examples include:

  • introducing pre-sessional modules such as Introduction to Economic Theory and Digital Marketing bootcamp. These help you gain fundamental knowledge and skills, and accelerate learning on your programme
  • supporting student participation in extra-curricular activities, including competing in the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge and pitching to the Chartered Institute of Marketing

For each module you study, you'll also be given learning materials to work through independently.

Canvas VLE

You'll also have 24-hour access to Canvas, our Virtual Learning Environment. Through Canvas, you can access learning materials and resources to support you at any time.

How you'll be assessed

We use a variety of assessment methods, including:

  • essays
  • reports
  • a variety of examinations (computer-based, sat, open or closed book, case-study based)
  • portfolios
  • presentations
  • business simulations
  • video pitches

You'll also have opportunities to take part in research and consultancy projects.

Throughout your studies, your lecturers will provide continuous support. You'll have opportunities to practice and gain feedback so you can improve on your work.

Connecting you with the world of work

We know how important it is for you to connect with businesses to gain hands-on experience during your studies. To help you gain this experience, our teaching methods also include:

Our lecturers have rich industry experience and extensive business networks. We also have a fantastic alumni network, connecting you with business professionals across the globe. We'll support you to bring the outside world into your studies and support your development.

We're constantly improving our teaching to ensure you get the most out of your studies. We encourage students to give feedback and collaborate with us to have a direct influence on our programmes.

You can provide feedback through:

  • mid-semester 'check-ins' on your modules
  • student representatives
  • staff-student committees
  • surveys, such as NSS
  • conversations with teaching staff

Supporting you

We're here to support you during your studies.

Your teachers are here to provide you with support around your academic work. You'll also have a personal tutor who can give pastoral support. They can help you meet individual needs, fulfil your potential, or direct you to further support.

Student facilities

The Business School operates across two main locations:

  • the main Business School building, located on Barrack Road
  • the Frederick Douglass Centre, located on the Newcastle Helix (behind the main building) 

Both buildings offer study spaces, specialist labs, social areas and more to support you on your journey to success.
