Wellbeing

We provide lots of free and confidential wellbeing support so you can focus on your studies and reach your full potential.

We understand that transitioning to higher education and balancing responsibilities alongside studies can be challenging. It's important that you are supported during your studies to give you the best start to your career. We'll ensure you know how and where to access support should you need it.

The Business School has a dedicated Student Wellbeing Adviser to support you during your time with us. This is in addition to the central support available via the University.

The School's Student Wellbeing Adviser can signpost, advise and guide you. They can provide the best next steps to take if you experience difficulties that are impacting your wellbeing.

How we can help you

Support

Our Student Wellbeing Adviser can support you by:

  • being a confidential listening ear for you to talk to about factors impacting your wellbeing
  • advising you on your best next steps if you are struggling with a personal difficulty
  • recommending practical resources to help you improve and maintain your wellbeing
  • helping you understand and access support within our Student Wellbeing Services

Guidance

They can offer guidance on:

  • accessing assessments for specific learning difficulties
  • how to obtain medical evidence and claim reimbursement for the cost
  • how to arrange a Student Support Plan (SSP) with our Disability team

Contact

They can offer support via:

  • 1-1 appointments
  • drop-ins
  • email
  • a referral via your personal tutor/programme leader

We'll keep you updated regularly

The School's Student Wellbeing Adviser sends regular wellbeing messages via the School's Canvas site. You will get access to this site when you register with us as a student.

These wellbeing updates will give you important information on:

  • the services available
  • events running across the University
  • special events in the city

This means you'll know where to go and the support available if you need it.

If you're a current student, access wellbeing advice on Canvas.

We also share wellbeing support in our Student Hub in the School.

To ensure we are providing a service that meets your needs, we have a wellbeing notice board and suggestion box for you to get in touch anonymously. Here you can make any suggestions about how we can support you in the Business School.

I cannot thank you enough for guiding me through this difficult phase. Since our meeting, I have been feeling better. Once again, thank you so much for your time. I realise it was the best decision to come and see you.

Resources to maintain or improve your wellbeing

There are a range of services available in the University to support your mental and physical wellbeing. This includes:

  • Be Well@NCL – a collection of tried and tested books. These have been chosen in partnership with the University's Student Health and Wellbeing Service and other health professionals
  • Give it a Go – an activity programme for staff where you can try new things. It is open to all abilities and you don't need a membership
  • Sport and Active Wellbeing – engage in our sports and active wellbeing activities
  • Volunteering – why not develop new skills while supporting our local community by becoming a volunteer? Our Volunteer Union offers this service, and it can benefit your mental and physical health while helping others

Staying safe at the University

Newcastle is known for being a friendly and safe city. However, we know that coming to a new city or getting used to new surroundings and spaces can seem daunting. Your safety is paramount to us. We want you to feel safe and supported in and around our buildings during your studies.

We've put a range of safety measures in place to help you adjust to life at the University.

Safezone app

We're supported by SafeZone, a free app available to our students and colleagues. If you need help while you're on campus or in university managed accommodation, it'll connect you directly to our Security team.

SafeZone only shares your location when you ask for help or check in on campus. Its privacy feature means it doesn’t track you at other times.

University Security team

Our security team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies on campus.

This includes support if you're worried about your own physical or mental health or that of a fellow student.

You can call security on 0191 208 6817.

Campus Police Officer

We have our own campus Police Officer for Newcastle University. You can contact him directly on:

Email: gary.white@northumbria.police.uk

Phone: 0191 208 6817

You can also contact 999 for emergencies or the Northumbria Police switchboard 101 for non-emergencies.

We also hold student drop-in sessions with a police officer during term time. This gives you an opportunity to speak in a safe environment and ask questions or share any concerns. The police officer can also offer practical advice and guidance on crime prevention and personal safety.

Safe Taxi

During term time, if you are stranded with no money to get home but have your student card with you, you can use our Safe Taxi scheme.

It is available at any time of the day or night and it covers the cost of up to an £8 fare.

Your insights and support have played a significant role in my overall improvement and I'm truly grateful for that.
