Biography
Dr Ana Marina Ferreira-Duarte is a Biomedical Engineer and a specialist in biomimetic materials and engineering approaches applied in regenerative medicine. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy) in 2013. Her dissertation received the Award of High Qualification Research Doctorate from Scuola Interpolitecnica di Dottorato. Following, she relocated to the United Kingdom and joined Newcastle University as a Research Associate within the Arthritis Research UK (ARUK, now Versus Arthritis) Tissue Engineering Centre. Her work focused on the bio-functionalisation of 3D-printed scaffolds for orthopaedic applications. Her research contributed significantly to the field and helped in developing bio-functionalised materials that can enhance bone tissue regeneration. Then, in 2015, she was appointed as a Lecturer in Bioengineering at Newcastle Engineering School.
Currently, Dr Ferreira-Duarte’s research is centred on engineering bioinspired and biomimetic materials, micro-encapsulation systems, and surface functionalisation for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Her expertise in biomimetic materials and tissue engineering has led to several publications in leading journals (>75 peer-reviewed papers, Google Scholar h-index 27) and the development of patents. She collaborates with other researchers and institutions mainly in Europe, Central America and Asia, continuing to lead the way in the development of novel biomaterials and approaches for regenerative medicine.

Research Interests
Dr. Ferreira Duarte is at the forefront of biomimetic systems, emphasising naturally derived biomaterials for groundbreaking advancements in tissue engineering. Her research investigates into engineering of polymeric matrices and hydrogels as cell carriers, focusing on the development of biomaterials that mimic the properties of living tissues. She leads in creating hybrid constructs with advanced bio-functional properties, harnessing the potential of nature-inspired materials. Moreover, her expertise extends to a patented spray-dipping nanocoating technology, enhancing biomedical substrates with a natural touch for applications like drug delivery and implantable devices. Collaborating across disciplines, Dr. Ferreira Duarte pioneers regenerative medicine approaches through the synergy of tissue engineering and naturally derived biomaterials.
