Academic Supervisor: Mr Kenneth Rankin
My research investigates the basic science of sarcoma biology with a translational application to tumour surgery. My role within the Sarcoma Research Group involves studying the mechanisms of indocyanine green (ICG) cellular uptake to help guide its clinical use for near infrared (NIR) fluorescence guided surgery. I am also collaborating with Dr James Knight’s research group at the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences on the development of an MT1-MMP targeted antibody conjugate for image guided sarcoma surgery.
Research Projects:
- Investigating the mechanisms of preferential tumour uptake of indocyanine green in sarcoma cell lines and tissue
- Development of a targeted dual-modality (PET/NIRF) radioimmunoconjugate for image-guided sarcoma surgery
- Optimising immunofluorescence imaging techniques for the evaluation of histological specimens following fluorescence guided surgery
- Evaluating the role of MT1-MMP in sarcoma cell invasion using CRISPR Cas9
Research Fellowships undertaken at:
The Oxford Sarcoma Service, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre Oxford, UK - March 2022
The Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, USA – June 2022
Funding has been generously provided by:
Orthopaedic Research UK
Bone Cancer Research Trust
Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity
The National Sarcoma Awareness Project
Within our research group, I have taught 3 cohorts of MRes students lab based protocols and basic science skills, and I have supported 1 PhD student with CRISPR Cas9 gene editing (Principal Supervisor: Mr Kenneth Rankin).
