Creative Careers 2024

Are you thinking about a career in the creative sector? Find out more about the exciting programme of events organised by the Careers Service.

Join us on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 February 2024 to engage with a variety of industry professionals for a series of insightful events and workshops to be equipped with useful advice and the practical skills to help you gain experience in the creative sector.

Sessions include advertising, journalism, music, fine art, film, heritage and more. There are limited spaces available for each session, so make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Come and grow your industry contacts, explore new ideas and get inspired to be a professional creative!

NUSU Student Media Afternoon

Would you like to get involved with the University student paper, radio station or production team?

This Student Media Afternoon is a weekly event where all Student Media Branches, The Courier newspaperNewcastle Student Radio and Newcastle Uni TV give the opportunity to take article commissions, host a radio show, or become crew on audio-visual projects.


Come along to learn more about our award-winning Student Media, chat and build new skills. 


Making Magazines - with editors of The Modernist, Extra Teeth and Pilot

If so, attend this session with the Civic Journalism Lab for an afternoon of masterclasses, discussion and workshops on turning your ideas into print.

  • Dagny Tepper, editor-in-chief of Pilot, a digest "dedicated to all things creative, experimental and authentic

How I Became a Published Author with Lucy Nichol

Are you a writer and aspiring author? 

Come along to this session to hear from Lucy Nichol, a writer with a passion for mental health awareness, music, comedy and nostalgia. In this talk, Lucy will discuss her journey to becoming a published author of five books. You will hear what it’s like working with agents and publishers, as well as learn about self-publishing and other career paths that writers can explore. 

You’ll be given the opportunity to ask Lucy your questions during the talk.  


Music Promotion in Practice with Pippa Morgan

Join Pippa Morgan, Newcastle University alumni and A&R Executive from Liberty Music PR, for this practical workshop exploring all things music promotion.  

With a background in artist development and events, Pippa’s experience and knowledge will guide you through this session, where you will get the chance to build a music marketing campaign of your own. 


nesma and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) presents: ‘Career Stories, Me and CPD’

Are you interested in a career in PR and communications?  

Come along to this session hosted by nesma, in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) to learn more about the qualifications you’ll need to pursue a career in PR, what upskilling will look like, where to get work experience, and more.  

Our speakers will discuss their career stories, what their life has looked like after University, and how they first broke into the PR profession.  

There will also be a Careers Advice Sprint Session, where you’ll get the opportunity to network and ask our speakers your questions.

Are you a marketeer, intrigued by how AI can enhance your promotions?  

Come along to this hands-on session, led by Kathryn Wharton, a marketing and communications leader from KLW Marketing for the opportunity to grasp how generative AI tools can be used to enhance your marketing copy. You will be guided through practical tasks during the workshop, and there will be plenty of time to ask Kathryn your questions.  


The Real "Repair Shop" - Exploring Careers in Art Conservation

Do you have a passion for the arts and heritage sector?  

Attend this session to hear from Danielle Burke, Lead Art Historian at the Fine Art Restoration Company.  Danielle will discuss all things art conservation, and you will learn about the care and restoration of art and objects, from 16th century oil paintings and ceramics, to infamous Banksy murals and memorabilia. Come along to find out more about the roles and the career paths into conservation.  

You’ll be given the opportunity to ask Danielle your questions during the talk. 


An introduction to editing using DaVinci Resolve

Are you an aspiring content creator looking for a deeper insight into the world of editing?   

Come along to this hands-on session with Howell Media where you’ll be taken through the stages of professional postproduction delving deep into elements of editing. 
 
If you’re interested in finding out more about the world of video editing, attend this session, led by Issy Howell, Head of Production at Howell Media to have a go at using professional software, ‘DaVinci Resolve’ and learn some top tips and tricks to get started! 


Understanding and Accessing the Creative Sector in the UK and North East
