Alexander's story
An NU research internship allowed Alex to undertake world-leading research in flood risk management, developing specialist skills to take forward and utilise in his future career.
Why were you interested in doing an internship, and why did you choose your specific internship role?
I wanted to complete an internship to develop my specialist technical skills in a field I was interested in pursuing (flood risk management) and experience what it is like to be a researcher. I chose the Newcastle University internship because the Protect-NFM project was a world-leading research proposal that used a variety of methods to quantify the effects of NFM in headwater catchments.
What support did the Careers Service give you with your internship?
I first heard about the research internship through the careers services Jobs On Campus newsletter and applied by submitting a CV and cover letter and attending an interview. I used the CareerSet platform and the Careers Service CV workshop to polish and finalise my CV. In addition, I used the online interview resources to prepare for the interview.
What have you got out of your experience?
I learnt and developed a range of specialist modelling and flood risk management skills throughout the internship, including programming, hydrological modelling, GIS and computer software. In addition, I was introduced to various agencies and engineering consultancies that work in the flood management sector in the UK.
