Isabel's story
Work experience gained through the Careers Service helped Isabel to land an internship on the Chris Moyle's show on Radio X.
Why were you interested in doing an internship, and why did you choose your specific internship role?
I wanted to get my foot in the door, so to speak. The Chris Moyles Show internship is the quickest and most valuable way to gain insight into how a radio show runs. This internship allowed me access to gain experience at a national rado station and also gave me access to network of other radio opportunities.
What support did the Careers Service give you with your internship?
During my time at University, I was a host of the 'From Newcastle' Podcast, which is a role I received through the Careers Service. This job helped me gain knowledge that would then further help me into getting my first job/internship at Radio X. In terms of getting the role, I emailed the exec producer of the show and luckily they had just lost their intern for another position and were looking for someone quickly to fill the role. I had a chat with her that day and got the internship... I then started three weeks later!
What have you got out of your experience?
I will be forever grateful for this internship/job. They have kept me on as a freelancer producer and this position has springboarded me into other opportunites at other stations. I now do freelance work for Kiss Fm, Greatest Hits Radio and Virgin Radio.
In terms of the knowledge I have gained, here is a list of things that I got up to whilst working at X. This includes self producing a national show and working accross other brands such as Capital and Smooth:
- Producing and Editing The Chris Moyles Show Podcast weekly, which consistently reaches over a hundred thousand monthly listens
- Contributing and assisting towards on-air content, such as creating and presenting the feature ‘What’s the Crack?’ for a weekly listenership of over 1 million
- Cover producer for The Request Hour involving quickly retrieving callers and briefing listeners before they go on-air
- Tech op trained, overseeing weekend shows: Johnny Vaughan’s The Kickabout and The Chris Moyles Show on Saturday
- Booking and sourcing on-air guests
- Researching and producing high-quality, extensive guest notes and scripts
- Greeting and liaising with VIP on-air guests whilst working closely with on-air talent
- Assisting with outdoor broadcasts and a variety of out-of-studio content
- Responsible for fulfilment of competition prizes for winners and working closely with the commercial team
This role has given me unmatched skills to set me off for a hopefully long career in the radio industry.
