Sustainability and Resilience
Challenge Lead: Dr Alistair Ford
This cities research theme is helping to realise cities that are both resilient and sustainable. We are helping cities to transition to Net Zero whilst also realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
- adapting our urban areas and their infrastructure to be resilient in the face of extreme weather, climate change, pandemics and other shocks
- ensuring access to, and efficient use of, resources – including food, materials, energy and water
- integrating green and grey infrastructure by working with nature to provide the same levels of service whilst also providing wider economic, social and environmental benefits.
- embedding sustainability and resilience into urban planning
- harnessing data and smart technologies to improve safety, wellbeing whilst delivering service more efficiently and effectively
- building capacity and capability of people to engender more sustainable lifestyles and reduce vulnerability
