Mapping Values

Co-constructing understandings of the good city in pursuit of new models of urban governance

Professor Jeremy Crampton and Dr Isabel Williams are leading on this British Academy funded project, running from 1st April 2021 and due for completion on 30th March 2022. They have partnered with Dr David Hitchcock (Canterbury Christ Church University (LEAD)), Dr Duncan Hay (University College London), Dr Elmé Vivier (Nottingham Trent University), Dr Mirian Calvo (Lancaster University) and Dr Carina O'Reilly (Anglia Ruskin University).

Synopsis of the research project:

"Mapping Values'' proposes that that the resilient city is pandemic-ready, not simply post-pandemic. Combining citizen science and participatory design methods, the project aims to gather and chart public perceptions of social value around health and inclusivity in urban, particularly public, spaces. It will translate those perceptions into participatory policymaking, using public participatory GIS (PPGIS), phone mapping apps, facilitated walks, and oral histories to produce the required dataset. It will also host a series of workshops designed to bring community members and policymakers together, to facilitate conversations and share experiences between the two. Focusing on an area that sits within the London Boroughs of Brent and Camden, this project will explore whether better urban governance is achievable with a better understanding of how people perceive and engage with these ‘good’ places within their immediate urban environment.

Key outputs:

Outputs will include:

  • a policy event aiming to produce new knowledge that impacts local co-governance policies and ensures communication between members of the community and policymakers,
  • an open access report co-authored by the team that outlines findings and recommendations aimed at policymakers,
  • and open access datasets.
