Governing and Managing Cities
Theme Lead: Prof Andy Pike
This cities research theme focuses on how the crisis of representative democracy impacts cities.
It considers the divisive effects of:
- globalisation
- digitalisation
- populism
- social and political fragmentation
We explore:
- how cities can act as shelters against division and decay
- innovative forms and experiments in a participatory and representative democracy
- urban discontent and disaffection
- effectiveness of local policy interventions in urban processes
- impacts of increased political de-centralisation
- the fiscal crisis of the local state
- role of citizens and civil societies
In cities research, we investigate what urban government is for and the power and finance behind it.
