Governing and Managing Cities

Theme Lead: Prof Andy Pike

This cities research theme focuses on how the crisis of representative democracy impacts cities.

It considers the divisive effects of:

  • globalisation
  • digitalisation
  • populism
  • social and political fragmentation

We explore:

  • how cities can act as shelters against division and decay
  • innovative forms and experiments in a participatory and representative democracy
  • urban discontent and disaffection
  • effectiveness of local policy interventions in urban processes
  • impacts of increased political de-centralisation
  • the fiscal crisis of the local state
  • role of citizens and civil societies

In cities research, we investigate what urban government is for and the power and finance behind it.
