Work With Us

We believe that engaging with researchers outside of the University and with the public is an important part of our research mission.

Our researchers routinely work with commercial partners either to develop new programmes of research or to undertake contracted imaging studies.

We also work with our communities to promote science as a career through engagement with schools throughout the region. We do this through scientists travelling to schools and groups of students coming to events at the University.

CIVI welcomes interest from new collaborators and imaging research users to discuss new projects or ideas.

Working with Business

We have extensive research experience and knowledge in developing and applying imaging technologies in biomedical research.

We use all of our imaging facilities in commercial studies, whether delivering research as collaborative partners or undertaking commissioned imaging studies for commercial sponsors.

To discuss how in vivo imaging at Newcastle University may be helpful or incorporated into your research study or clinical trial, please email Professor Pete Thelwall.

Working with Researchers

We have extensive research experience and knowledge in developing and applying imaging technologies in biomedical research. CIVI researchers are always keen to contribute to the design of research studies and would encourage all researchers to contact us to discuss their ideas, at the earliest opportunity.

Guide to conducting imaging research within CIVI

The key steps involved in the initiation of a study, incorporation of Centre-specific information into applications for funding and ethical approval, and performance of the study are:

  1. Email us to arrange a meeting with the CIVI technical team and directors, to discuss your project design
  2. We will provide you with a costings request form
  3. If your study is accepted, official study costs will be finalised and relevant information provided to you; it is our policy that scanner safety information provided by our MR physics team is incorporated into applications for ethical approval
  4. Submit your grant application and ethics application and notify us of successful funding and ethical approval
  5. Your study is registered with us once all approvals are in place
  6. Schedule your study scans and attend relevant safety training, if applicable

Details of the documents required to undertake scanning can be found in this document (PDF: 215KB).

Working with Schools

We are always happy to engage with schools to promote science as a discipline and give students an understanding of what is involved in being a research scientist.

Medical imaging techniques create a wealth of information about the body and how it functions. To achieve these measurements we merge together many disciplines and aspects of science including:

  • magnetism
  • quantum mechanical physics
  • synthetic chemistry
  • engineering
  • radio frequency technology and electronics
  • computing and imaging analysis
  • biology
  • physiology
  • psychology

Many aspects of medical imaging are now also included in the A-level curriculum.
