Funding

We have a range of funding options available.

Overview

We provide a variety of funding for our students. This includes:

  • travel and mobility schemes
  • student bursaries
  • studentships

There are also sources of support for travel and conference funding.

Postgraduate studentships

Studentships are available in Arts and Humanities through the AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnerships.

Studentships are available in Social Sciences through the ESRC Doctoral Training in Social Sciences in the North East and Northern Ireland (NINE DTP).

North East Doctoral Training Centre also offers dedicated Language Based Areas Studies studentships. These are for students studying Iberian and/or Latin American Studies.

Funding to study at Newcastle

The University also has a number of Memorandums of Understanding with Universities in Latin America and the Caribbean. These facilitate students wishing to study in Newcastle University.


AHRC postgraduate studentships

Studentships for Masters and PhD training in the Arts and Humanities. Postgraduate Arts and Humanities projects can gain funding through the AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership.

These PhD studentships are available for UK and European students.

Before you apply

Look at at staff interests on our people page. Identify a potential supervisor.

Make contact with them as soon as possible. This will help you to develop your application.

Your project

Applications are welcome on a wide range of topics that may have a disciplinary or interdisciplinary focus. These are within the arts and humanities and some social sciences with a cultural studies emphasis.

ESRC postgraduate studentships

Studentships for Masters and PhD training in social science.

Postgraduate projects in Social Sciences can gain funding through the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre.

These studentships are available in our Iberian and Latin American Studies pathway.

If you are applying from outside Newcastle, funds are available to cover the cost of UK travel to meet with potential supervisors.

Before you apply

Look at staff interests on our people page. Identify a potential supervisor.

You'll need to work closely with your potential supervisor on your application.

Contact the Doctoral Training Centre coordinator Nick Morgan to discuss your application. 

You must be in contact with potential supervisors and coordinators before the deadline. This gives you enough time to develop the full application.

Your project

Applications are welcome on a wide range of topics that may have a disciplinary or interdisciplinary focus. Take a look at our work to get a sense of the breadth of topics:

You don't necessarily need a social science first degree to apply through this pathway.

You'll be supervised by a panel of two or three members of staff whose expertise fit your project.

How to apply

You need to apply through the ESRC Doctoral Training in Social Sciences in the North East and Northern Ireland (NINE DTP).

The application form includes:

  • a proposal
  • sections concerning fit with the supervisors’ interests and experience
  • a detailed training programme tailored to the specific student’s needs

The development of all these elements requires close consultation with potential supervisors.


Travel and conference funding

There are a number of sources of support for postgraduate travel for research and dissemination purposes.

Mobility Award Funding

Santander Mobility Funding is available on a yearly basis. It's open to eligible staff and postgraduate students (research and taught) from any School or Faculty at Newcastle University.

CLAC also offers Mobility Funding to staff and postgraduate students. Information on how to apply will appear on our news page when the call is open.

Society of Latin American Studies

The Society provides postgraduate grants and bursaries for conferences and travel.

They also have a range of essay prizes.

Support funds

You might also find support funds through the University's Schools and Faculty Doctoral Training Programmes.

These are sponsored by the UK Research Councils. They're for students working in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences at Newcastle University.

In Social Sciences, you can look for funding through ESRC Doctoral Training in Social Sciences in the North East and Northern Ireland (NINE DTP).

In Arts and Humanities, you can look for funding through AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Programme.
