As Director of Business and Engagement (DBE) for the School of Computing, I act as an ambassador for the School to industry, governments and the third sector. We welcome a constant stream of visits and requests from organisations ranging from local start-ups, to established businesses, national and multinational companies. My team and I have ensured that we work with a wide range of organisations so, as well as the obvious blue-chip companies within the software sector, we work with companies from across the business spectrum (all companies are data companies now), as well as venture capitalists, public sector organisations, charities and other third sector entities. I have introduced a light-touch methodology for initial contact with organisations, so that each relationship is bespoke to that organisation, and we track progress to ensure that it is mutually beneficial.
As a member of the School Executive Board for the School of Computing, I contribute to the strategy, governance and success of the school.
As Chair of Board of Studies for the School of Computing, I encourage engagement and focused debate from the school’s teaching staff, and facilitate the design, scrutiny and approval of numerous new programmes, changes to procedure, and initiatives for fulfilling student expectations and aspirations.
As Senior Lecturer on the Computer Games Engineering MSc programme and related UG modules, I help place around 40 students a year into the highly contested computer games industry. The games industry locally, nationally and globally engages with the courses, and our reputation is very high, due to the high quality of teaching, with annual evolution influenced by the industrial advisory board.
As a member of the Networked and Ubiquitous Systems Engineering group within the School of Computing, I contribute to multiple research projects papers. I am also on the programme committee for four international conferences annually.
As Director of Business and Engagement for the School of Computing I have overview of student employability and career opportunity. This year Newcastle University is ranked third in the country for employability of Computer Science undergraduates according to the Guardian University Guide. I also have overview of the School’s global activity, in terms of both recruitment of international students, and promoting working relationships with institutions around the world.
