I received my BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University in 2009, then in 2010 received my MSc Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology from Newcastle University. My PhD thesis (awarded in 2015) was supervised by Dr. Phillip Lord, in the area of Ontologies. More specifically the Ontology of Karyotypes and Mitochondria. For more information on my research activities click on the “Research” tab.
I mainly work with the first year undergraduates and the bioinformatics masters. For more information on my teaching activities click on the “Teaching” tab.
As Co-Director of Education for the School for Computing, I help oversee the quality and student experience of the School's programmes.
I will be teaching on the following modules during the 2024-25 academic year:
CSC1034: Programming Portfolio 1 – Lecturer
CSC8621: Computing Foundations of Data Science – Lecturer
Project Supervision:
During my time at Newcastle University I have supervised, both BSc and MSc final projects in Web & mobile application development as well as teaching and learning in CS. I am interested in supervising projects in the areas of web & mobile application development, teaching & learning in CS and ontologies. If interested, feel free to approach me and propose your own project idea or discuss what project best fits your own interests.
Additional responsibilities:
As Chair of the Postgraduate Taught Board of Examiners (BoE) for MSc Computer Science and MSc Bioinformatics, I oversee school preparations for examinations of these two programmes.
During the academic year I undertake placement visits to some of our students that are working in industry for the year.
Furthermore, as an academic staff member I continue to support the CS admission days, e.g., presenting school talk.
Past responsibilities:
2022-23: CSC8435: Web Client Applications – Module Leader
2020-23: BoE Chair for MSc Synthetic Biology
2019-23: CSC1035: Programming Portfolio 2 – Lecturer
2021-22: Peer mentor staff coordinator for the local CS peer mentoring scheme
2020-22: BoE Chair for MSc Computational Neuroscience and Neuroinformatics
2020-22: CSC8330: Advanced Programming for Digital Biology – Lecturer
2019-22: Senior Tutor - supervise the overall pastoral care in the school as well as provide support to students and staff
2018-22: UG1 Stage Coordinator - support the DPDs in the management and support of UG1
2017-20: CSC8311: Advanced Programming for Biologists – Lecturer
2017-20: CSC8317: Introductory Programming for Biologists – Lecturer
2014-20: Demonstrator recruitment and Coordination (for UG Stage 1 modules)
2018-19: CSC1024: Computer Architecture – Lecturer
2016-19: CSC1026: Website Design and Construction – Lecturer
2015-19: CSC8313: Bioinformatics Theory and Practice – Practicals
2015-19: Peer mentor staff coordinator for the local CS peer mentoring scheme
2014-18: Outreach advocate for the local CS outreach workshops and events
My main research activities focus on the development of ontologies, specifically using a more automated and pattern driven approach. For more information click here.
In December 2015, I presented a half day tutorial on my PhD research at SWAT4LS 2015 national conference at Cambridge University and in July 2015, we won the best demo prize at ICBO 2015 international conference. In October 2014, I was asked to present as guest speaker at the inaugural “Women in Computing” event and in March 2014, I was fortunate to be asked to represent Newcastle University at the WomENcourage 2014 conference. Furthermore I was one of the local organisers for UKON 2016 and ICBO 2017, hosted by Newcastle University.
