How are young people in rural Britain affected by inequalities?
Researchers based in CRE are investigating the impacts of the 2008 economic crisis and its aftermath on young people in a sparsely populated rural area of England. Dr Niki Black, Dr Karen Scott and Prof Mark Shucksmith are looking at themes including key milestones from childhood to adulthood, and the available resources and opportunities and access to sources of welfare for young people. The project began in January 2016 and the researchers have carried out interviews and focus groups with young people aged 16 – 29 in Glendale, Berwick, Alnwick and Newcastle. They are now at the data analysis stage of the research project which runs until the beginning of April 2017. For further information contact Niki Black nicki.black@ncl.ac.uk.
