Agri-food Industry Restructuring in Ukraine and Moldova (AFIRUM)

This project investigated the restructuring of the food processing sectors in Moldova and Ukraine, with a particular emphasis on the evolution of the relationships between processors and farmers following land reform and privatisation.

  • Project Dates: 2000 - 2003
  • Project Leader: Matthew Gorton
  • Sponsors: EU INTAS

The project involved both survey and case study research. Enterprise level survey data revealed a new, diverse set of market actors. Cluster analysis was employed to better characterise these different groups of processors, with a three-cluster solution adopted. The three clusters identified coalesce around: the former kombinants, new private sector traders and small-scale peasant operations. The characteristics and dynamics of each cluster were explored as a basis for considering the likely nature that future restructuring will take.
