Gendered Bodies: Personnel Policies & the Culture of the British Army

This research focused on culture and gender in the British Army.

  • Project Dates: 2001 - 2002 (11 months)
  • Project Leader: Rachel Woodward
  • Staff: Rachel Woodward and Patricia Winter
  • Sponsors: ESRC and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) via the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) under the Joint ESRC/MoD Research Grant Scheme.

The research, funded by the ESRC and MoD, investigated the ways in which military culture as a ‘whole way of life’, and as a set of gendered social practices, influences the development and implementation of policies aimed at women’s participation in the Army. It looked at a range of policies developed over the past three years (prior to 2001), including those that were currently under review.
